I couldn't turn my gaze from the man, the colour once again leaving my face. Every instinct in my body told me to get away from him, that he was dangerous.
"Ethan..." I whispered, "Hide,"
He looked up at me from where he sat on ground with confusion, "Huh? Why?"
"Do you believe what I told you?" I snapped. He nodded slightly, "Then trust me and hide. Now."
He crawled away into some undergrowth and lay there, watching me with wide green eyes. I didn't think that the man had seen him, which was good, at least. His eyes met mine and a smirk crossed his face as he began striding purposefully in our direction.
I urged my legs to move but they wouldn't; they'd turned to jelly. I had to run. I had to get him away from Ethan, or we'd both be hurt.
The man was within six metres by now, his smirk becoming a large smile. The following events happened so fast that they were little less than blurs in my head.
I saw the gun he had in his belt. My legs woke up. I ran at full speed away from him.
Heavy footsteps behind me were the only thing that indicated he followed me, otherwise he was as silent as a mouse. I pushed my legs to go faster but was quickly tiring. My breath rattled and I felt sweat drip down the back of my neck as I reached a fence at the edge of the field. Beginning to scale it, as I jumped down the other side I looked up to see the man at the top of the fence. Crying out with fear, I took off again, footsteps pounding on the tarmac of the road and heading further away from the school. I knew he could just shoot me at any time. He was just toying with me.
I came to a crossroads, the sign in the middle pointing in three directions. Having no time to choose a path, I ran forward, toward a place called, 'Sunset Wood'. It turned out to be a small area of woodland with a single path leading in through dense trees. Seeing no other way, I tore along the small path, glancing behind every few seconds to see him getting closer and closer. He hadn't even broken a sweat. Quickly formulating a plan in my head, I cut sharply to the left so that I was no longer on the path and began to loop back around to the entrance. Glancing back, I saw that he'd fallen a few metres behind. Feeling a sense of triumph, I reached the edge of the wood and was back on the road, headed to the school. This time I ignored the field and kept going to the gates, scaling them and leaping down the other side, where I stood, panting. The man smirked from behind the gate and walked away, leaving me confused. Moments later, Mr Loin greeted me with a very annoyed expression.
"Hello Davidson. Would you like to tell me why you and Ethan were skipping, who you were running from and why you were running from him?" he demanded. I waited for my breathing to calm down before speaking.
"To answer your questions in order: we were bored, I have no idea and he had a gun and was smiling at me. Evilly."
Mr Loin's eyes widened slightly, before he shook his head, "You have an extra hour of detention."
I groaned loudly and trudged to class, which was Math. I nodded at Katia, who watched me with a curious gaze.
"Where have you been?" she mouthed. I directed my gaze away from her and tried to hide the fact that my hands were trembling slightly. If only she knew...
OoOoOoOoOoOoOo
The day ended after long last, and I slunk to Mr Loin's office for my detention. He greeted me with a sly smile and welcomed me in.
"I didn't expect you to get a detention so soon, to be honest Ryuuhei," he scolded, "Matt told me that you'd be a good student, and while on your entrance exams you got straight A's I have yet to see that. You don't pay attention in class, you're friends with that trouble maker Ethan, you were in a fight on your first day and now I've caught you skipping!"
I let my head hang low, giving him the satisfaction he wanted, yet in truth I wasn't sorry in the slightest. I already knew everything that we would cover, and had even witnessed in person some of the events we studied, so it didn't really matter that I skipped one or two lessons.
"I'm not going to call Matt now, as I don't want to dissapoint him so soon into the term, yet know that I will not hesitate next time. Understand?"
"Yes sir,"
"I don't want to see this behaviour again."
"Of course, sir,"
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Two hours later, I was finally allowed to go back to the dorm. I found Ethan and Karl sitting on their beds, doing homework. I greeted them wearily and slumped into my own. Ethan laughed nervously.
"Did you tell him anything? Are you going to tell me anything?"
I groaned, "no and later,"
Karl looked at us boredly and rolled his eyes, scribbling something on the homework he was doing.
I closed my eyes and sighed, trying to figure out what had happened earlier. Deciding to text Matt about it, I picked up my mobile and sent:
Any ideas why a man with a gun chased me today? Just wondering, don't really want to go through that again.
The text wasn't very serious but got to the point. Moments later, Matt was calling me.
"Hello," I answered the phone overly cheerily. On the other end, Matt growled.
"Don't you hello me!" he yelled, making me wince, "You were chased by a man with a gun!?"
"Yeah,"
Karl's eyes widened at me, and I grinned at him.
"I'm coming to get you!" Matt shouted again, worry in his voice.
"Don't!" I whined, child like, "I want to see if he reappears. Besides, its fun here,"
Matt sighed loudly, "Fine. But if you see him again, I'm coming to get you,"
I heard him put the phone down and yawned.
"How was your detention?" Ethan grinned, while Karl watched us with slight horror.
"It was fun," I joked. He laughed and so did I, until neither of us could stop. Karl stood and left the room.
"So.." Ethan said seriously when he was gone, "Who was that guy?"
Shrugging, I lounged back, "I haven't a clue."
A loud scream stopped Ethan from replying. We both froze, then ran out in the direction of the sound. We found Katia wailing loudly outside, surrounded by several teachers.
"Katia!" I yelled, running to her. She looked at me through teary eyes, so unlike her usual cold personality.
"Ryuu!" she sobbed, clinging to me and making tears well up in my own eyes from the name.
"What happened?" I asked softly, trying to ignore the fact that her tears were soaking through my shirt.
"Lily!" she shrieked, "Lily's dead!"
