Shanice POV

"Awe! She's so cute," I cooed over baby Savanna. Jada and Shaq had their baby girl just a week ago and unfortunately I missed it but luckily I would be coming here for the break so there was no need to fly out here so soon. "Hi baby, hi! It's your favorite auntie! I'm going to be the one to teach you all the curse words okay?"
"Girl get the hell away from my child," Jada laughed pushing me out of the way.
"Girl you know damn well she's going to learn all the cusses from your potty ass mouth," I chuckled. "Oh Mae, how's the thing with Tre's mom?"
"I think I'm the only one who's worried about it," she sighed.
"Because you are," Jada said.
"You would be too if your kids might be getting taken away from you."
"Yes but that's not happening now is it? We told you don't sweat it."
"I can't help it," she whined. "I try to get it out of my mind and relax like Tre says but I can't. I'm worried they'll feel bad for her and-"
"Calm down," I said. "Tre has raised them since they were kids. You've been there for them everyday for the past three years. Legally, Tre is their parent and so are you. They're not going to rip those kids away from you guys."
"I've been telling her that everyday," Tre said walking by the room.
"Maybe if you'd just tell me what your secret plan is I wouldn't be so worried," she called after him.
"I don't need a secret plan," he yelled.
"She seriously will not believe that he has nothing up his sleeve about this trial," Jada rolled her eyes.
"Because Tre always have something up his sleeve," she mumbled.
"Maybe this time he doesn't because he figures he doesn't need any secret weapons or tricks. Seriously Mae, relax. You're only 21 and acting like a 30 year old woman," Jada said.
"Okay," she sighed. "I'll chill out. Try at least. Enough about me, how have you been Shani?"
"Better than I expected," I shrugged. Which is true.
"How are things with you and Grant?" Jada asks while wiggling her eyebrows.
I laughed. "We're fine. Hung out before the break. He's actually cooler than I thought he'd be. Kind of funny too."
"Ooh you like him," Jada cheesed. "I knew you would if you had actually given him a real chance."
"A little bit," I laughed.
"That's kind of...soon," Mae said. "Are you sure you should be getting so attached to him so soon? I mean it's been a while and things change."
"Yeah I guess you're right. But we're not dating or anything. It's just nice to have somebody around to talk to and be relaxed with. For the first time in a long time, I feel a little like me again."
"Well, as long as you're not pushing yourself too much." I nodded and smiled at Mae. Even when she said she's not going to worry she ends up worrying. She really is the mother of our entire group.
Maelynn POV
*
"Shani you're phone is ringing," Jada said changing Savanna's diaper.
"It's Grant," she said getting up. "I'll be back."
"Okay what's up?" Jada asked me.
"What's up with what?"
"Why are you acting like you don't like Shani and Grant dating?"
"They're not dating," I said. "And I'm not acting like anything."
"We've been friends for a long time Mae. I know when you're lying. And that was a giant pile of horse shit. You really didn't think I wouldn't notice your 'subtle' hints of disapproval?"
"I wouldn't say I don't like it per se. I'm just a bit weary of the entire thing."
"Why?"
"Because we both know she still loves Dee. Just as much as she did back then when we came up with the plan."
"Yeah so?"
"So there's no difference between then and now. She's attaching herself to Grant again out of a hurt place. If she's not careful she could get hurt."
"Grant isn't a bad guy Mae. And there is a difference. Last time was for revenge. This time she's looking for healing and Grant could be good for her. I'm worried too but as her friends we need to support her. I know Dee's our friend too but HE fucked up. HE cheated and lied throughout their relationship. What he and Shani had was toxic as hell. All I want is for her to truly be happy."
"Me too but-"
"It's Shani's life Mae. We wouldn't be right stepping in the middle of it. We just have to be there for her when or if things get rough. Tre's paranoia is rubbing off on you."
I sighed and nodded. I should be a good friend and support her. I don't want her thinking I'm choosing Dee's side or anything. I just have this gut feeling that something isn't right. And it's not just me. Tre, Royal and Shaq all believe something isn't exactly right. We don't know what it is exactly but something seems off. With the timing of Grant arriving, all the other drama. With so many other people feeling the same way it can't just be nerves right?
Another day late update 🤦♀️. Stupid behind schedule got me all mixed up. Anyways I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. We got to hear from Maelynn!! I don't know about you guys but it feels like we've been hearing a lot of Shani lately. Didn't really realize it when I wrote it.
Tell me what you all think!
