Long Road Ahead

Adam lay his head against the window. He could feel the cold country air blow into his face from the broken front windscreen of the car.
They both decided to take turns driving because of the long journey. The first part of the trip was uneventful but when nightfall came they decided they couldn't sleep in the car or they might get frostbite because of the broken windscreen.
They went and cleared out a gas station only to find that the place was already claimed by possums and rats so they got back in the car and continued driving.
Adam couldn't sleep because every time he closed his eyes he would see his brother. He would see him cycling his bike to school and then a group of guys would appear and he would try to cycle away but they would chase after him and push his bike to the ground.
Adam then woke up startled realizing that he drifted off to sleep. He felt disoriented, he then looked over to Georgie who was reading 'Bear Grill's Survival Guide'.
Adam then started talking to Georgie. "Why aren't we moving?" Georgie put down his book and pointed to the gas meter. Adam frowned "Fuck!". Georgie smiled and pointed to a sign that read 'Welcome to Kentucky'.
Adam smiled . "Looks like were halfway there brother!" Georgie said. "Well we aren't going any further if we don't get any fuel." Adam muttered.
Georgie took out his map and looked at it for a minute. "There's no gas station nearby, we might as well walk the rest of the way." "Alright lets go then." Adam responded.
Although it was pitch black the two continued walking down the highway.
They walked for a solid hour along the highway when Georgie then turned and said "I'm gonna collapse with exhaustion man, I've been up for the past 24 hours man, I'm gonna sleep in this car over here." "I'll make sure nothing eats your face off then." Joked Adam.
Georgie got into the abandoned vehicle and tried to sleep while Adam looked around the empty highway. He then walked over to a white van that was parked on the side of the highway.
Adam pulled out his handgun and put his finger on the trigger. He then opened the van door. Suddenly a high pitch, blaring alarm went off. Adam froze but that didn't last long because he was then tackled to the ground by some fat guy and a girl jumped out of the back of the van with an assault rifle.
Adam's face was planted to the ground by the guy. In the background Adam could hear Georgie opening the car door and getting out.
The girl then shot at the car and screamed "Stay were you are or I'll shoot!" Georgie put up his hands up and calmly said "We don't want any trouble ma'am." "We didn't either until you pulled up." She replied. Georgie said "Alright were are you folks headed?" "New York" she replied confidently. "We're going to a lake house in Kentucky." "Ron get off the poor fella we're gonna follow these guys it sounds like they know what their doing, well if their okay with it?" "Fuck off!" Georgie replied. Adam then interrupted "Ron's bit!" Georgie pulled out his knife. "When did you get that?" "Only a minute a.........." Ron then dropped to the floor and his blood vessels started popping. The girl then started screaming. Adam quickly picked up the gun he dropped and shot him in the head. The girl then pulled out a cleaver from her backpack and attacked Adam.
She grabbed him and pushed him onto the ground and went to plant it into his shoulder but then Georgie grabbed her and threw her against the van. She hit her head badly on the the van and then passed out.
Adam got back up. "Do you think she's dead?" Adam asked him worryingly. Georgie bent down and looked at her head. "It doesn't look fatal anyway." "What do we do with her then?" Georgie got up and started searching Ron's pocket. "Bingo I got the keys for the van." Adam picked up the girl in his arms. "Hey what are you doing?" Adam put her in the back of the van. "Well I'm not leaving her here to die man!" Georgie looked annoyed "Come on Adam it's survival of the fittest you know like the eye of the tiger type of stuff." Adam shut the van door. "What if we were in this situation, wouldn't you want to live?"
Georgie looked annoyed "Fine but once she's better where leaving her in some gas station or something." Adam nodded "Fine then."
Adam got in the van and turned on the engine. While Georgie got in the back of the van and tied the girl's hands and feet together.
Georgie then got into the passenger seat. "Let's go Adam." Adam started driving and Georgie closed his eyes trying to get some sleep.
Adam was 21 years old and was fresh out of law school when the infection started spreading. It was the summer after his graduation when things started going wrong.
Five days after 'Extra Numb' was introduced at least 95% of the American population was wiped out and replaced with aggressive cannibals.
When everything was going downhill. Adam didn't want to go outside anyway because all he wanted to do was sit inside and look through his brothers photo album. He didn't think anything about the painkiller controversy. Then two days after 'Extra Numb' was released Adam got a call from his Dad. He said that his Mother sprained her ankle and took the 'Extra Numb' painkiller and now was extremely aggressive. He just about escaped and locked himself in the bathroom but she was banging on the door.
Adam's apartment was about 5 minutes away from their house so he ran through the back alleys to get there.
When he opened the door with his spare key he saw his Dad lying lifeless on the bathroom floor with a soulless monster ripping his guts out and chewing on them.
Adam then closed the door and walked home. He then got uncontrollably sick all over his apartment floor. It felt like months ago since that day but it was only two weeks ago.
Adam saw the sun coming up over the horizon and then he heard a whisper "Dear Lord I pray for forgiveness as I've sinned, I pray for safety against this dangerous world Amen."
Adam felt a stroke of guilt he felt that he caused this so he whispered back ,"Were not gonna hurt you, you're safe here."
The van went quiet and then the voice responded , "Thank you."
