Adam woke up with a pounding headache and a dry mouth. He tilted his head to the right and looked out the window. It was probably midday by the look of it. He sat up in bed and saw that his entire torso was covered in plaster.
Adam stood up and wobbled across the room. He walked down the hall and stood at the top of the stairs. "Adam!" Rachael screamed as she walked out of the kitchen. She ran up the stairs and hugged him. "Ahh my wound!" Winced Adam. "Sorry," Rachael added as she let go of him.
"How long have I've been out for?" Asked Adam. "A week," replied Rachael. "Shit!" Exclaimed Adam. "Yeah we were pretty sure you were dead," remarked Rachael. "Were is everyone?" "Deirdre and her kid Kevin are outside collecting berries, Frank,Georgie and Lucas are out fishing in the lake." Adam nodded and added "I'm gonna get dressed and then we can go outside and join everyone." Rachael agreed and went down stairs.
Adam stared into the bathroom mirror. He felt the same as he did when Austin stabbed him. He sighed and looked at the blue butterfly sitting on the mirror. "I suppose you've been bored for the past week with no one to follow around," He told the butterfly. Adam then put on his jacket and left the bathroom.
Adam walked out the front door and inhaled the air like a drug he then turned around the corner and stood by the lake. He could see the fishing boat in the distance. He could see a faint outline of someone waving to him from the boat.
Rachael then tapped Adam on the shoulder. "Follow me I want to show you something," she happily told him. "Alright," Adam responded. They both walked over to the small garage beside the house. "Wait here," Rachael told him as she disappeared into the garage.
Adam put his hands in his pockets but felt something at the bottom of his left pocket. He pulled it out and saw that it was the rubix cube he gave Rachael earlier.
Rachael then came out of the garage with a motorcycle. "Looks like Austin used to ride bikes." "Does it have fuel?" Asked Adam. Rachael then pointed to a fuel tank that was next to the house. "That's full to the top," she smiled." "We're set!" Cheered Adam.
An hour later everyone sat around the dinner table. Deirdre then came out with a blue catfish sliced up on a tray. She placed it on the table and sat down. Everyone began eating the fish and drinking the juice that Deirdre made with the grapes that she and Kevin collected.
Later on everyone sat around the lounge and played monopoly. Then Georgie came down the stairs and passed a rifle to Adam. "Your turn on watch," he told Adam. "Alright."
Adam got up onto the roof and looked at the rifle. A month ago Adam wouldn't of known how to work but know he knew guns inside out. Adam dangled his legs off the side of the roof and stared at the night sky. He then heard Rachael climb onto the roof. "Any mutants?" She asked. Adam shook his head "None." Rachael then sat beside Adam and leaned her head against his shoulder. "It's weird to think less than a month ago we were doing taxes and going to work but now we're shooting sinners and sleeping with one eye open," Sighed Rachael. "I don't miss it anymore, my old life was shit," Adam told her as he noticed that a butterfly landed on his hand. Rachael stared off into the stars and whispered "Were nothing compared to the sinners, except wandering hearts." The butterfly on Adam's hand then flew off into the night sky and disappeared into the stars. Adam brushed a tear out of his eye and put his arm around Rachael. "Your right were just wandering hearts."
