The sun began to slowly go down as the day slowly drifted away making the dark vulnerable night appear once again.
Adam sat by Rachael's side balancing his head on his hand. He stared through the window and admired the sun slowly disappearing behind the horizon. It was leaving a glowing reflection against the calm lake water.
Adam zoned out for a minute but was then snapped back into reality.
Adam was stuck. He felt overwhelmed considering no one else was gonna take control of the situation with Georgie and Austin along with Rachael being wounded and that fucking butterfly that would always appear at the wrong time.
After attempting to clean the vomit off his bedroom floor (that lead to him to throwing up again) he then threw in the towel and decided to sit with Rachael.
Adam then went to pull his hand away from Rachael but she clung onto it. "Rachael?" Adam gasped as he continued to hold her hand. Her eyes slowly opened. "Yeah," she responded weakly. Adam tightened his grip on her hand. "Your awake!" Cheered Adam. Rachael sat up a bit and nodded. "I suppose so," she responded hoarsely.
Adam stood up and ran down the hall and stopped at the top of the stairs. "She's awake!" He called down the stairs. He then returned to the room and sat down beside her. "Did you kill that dick who shot me?" She asked. "I'll explain more about that later," Adam stammered.
The woman who looked at Rachael earlier came into the room and smiled. "Someone made a full recovery," she grinned. Rachael laughed "Yeah!" Adam stood up and shook the woman's hand. "Thank you so much," Adam said. "Well your welcome, uhh your name is?" Asked the woman. "It's Adam," he replied. "Well nice to meet you Adam my name is Deirdre," she said. Adam smiled "It's good to meet you to." Deirdre looked at Rachael. "She looks fine to me anyway, I'll just leave you folks to it," Deirdre said as she walked out of the room.
Adam sat down on the chair next to Rachael's bed. Adam took the rubix cube that Rachael found out of his pocket. "I found this in your room," Adam said. Before Rachael could reply Georgie game crashing into the room. "There's about 50 fucking sinners coming our way!" He gasped.
Adam stood up and followed Georgie. They ran into the lounge were Austin was busy loading a pistol. "Here take this kid, your coming with us," Austin told the child. Deirdre then stepped in. "No he isn't shooting until he's older," Deirdre told Austin. "THERE'S FUCKING 50 SINNERS HEADING OUR WAY BITCH!" He yelled. Deirdre shook her head "He's not shooting," she assured him.
The other man in there group stepped in. "This isn't important, what's important is that a horde of sinners are coming our way!" He interrupted. "He's right we'll leave the kid here," agreed Adam. Georgie then handed Adam a shotgun. "Let's go then!" Said a slightly annoyed Georgie.
Then Georgie,Adam,Austin and the two other guys in the group ran outside to face the mutants. Adam froze when he saw the massive group of sinners heading right towards there safe house. Austin grinned and shouted "It's slaughter time motherfuckers!" They took aim and started firing. Adam flanked off to the left to stop about 5 sinners that appeared from the woods and that were now trying to join the massive horde.
Adam took fire and shot one in the shoulder. "Fuck!" Adam whispered to himself when he realized his gun only had one round left in the chamber and that he just used it. He struggled to put the next magazine into gun and the quickly approaching sinner. Adam then threw his gun on the ground and pulled his pocket knife out of his pocket. The sinner then tackled him to the ground and put their arms on his shoulders. Adam screamed as the decayed face lunged towards him. Then Austin grabbed the sinner off Adam and threw it onto the ground. He then pulled a machete out of his holster and sliced it's head off. "Boom Bitch!" He shouted at it's sliced head. Adam stood up but was pulled to the side by Austin. "We're bringing half the horde this way and the other guys are bringing half the other way!" Screamed Austin into Adam's ear. Adam nodded and began running along the path that went around the lake.
Adam and Austin were keeping up a full on sprint around the lake as around thirty mutants followed them at an alarmingly fast pace. Adam didn't have time to reload his gun so all the shooting was left up to Austin. Adam noticed Austin's breath getting increasingly louder as they sprinted on the path.
Adam wasn't surprised considering that he was around 50 years old.
Austin then tripped on his own step and plummeted to the ground. "Help!" He screamed as he clutched his sprained leg. Adam turned around and grabbed Austin's coat collar and tried to drag him but couldn't.
Then the image of Austin picking up a belt and hiding Georgie with it fueled an anger with Adam.
He squatted down and whispered in Austins ear "Burn in hell!" and then he stood up but saw the same blue butterfly on his shoulder. Adam grabbed the pistol that was in Austin pocket and shot an approaching sinner. He then pulled Austin up. "Consider yourself lucky!" Adam told him. Austin smiled "I do asshole!"
Adam turned around and continued shooting the sinners. Then when he had two round left in his magazine so he turned around and started running while dragging Austin behind him.
"Your a smart kid you know, because realistically you would all die instantly if I wasn't there to protect your sorry asses!" Shouted Austin. Adam worked through the urge to just let him go and let the sinners have him.
Unfortunately Adam couldn't run very fast because he had to drag Austin and the sinners were catching up on them. "Run faster!" Roared Austin.
Adam could see Georgie and the other guys in the distance with no sinners behind them but he was running out of energy. "For fuck sake when I was your age I could run around this lake 10 times without stopping!" Shouted Austin.
Adam's heart then dropped. There was a fallen tree blocking their path. There was no way he was gonna get himself and Austin over the tree. "Change of plan we're taking the scenic route!" Adam screamed. He then turned off into the woods while dragging Austin with him.
Adam cursed under his breath. The sun had went down so there was no light in the forest. It was like walking around at night with a blindfold on. Adam then smiled as a blue butterfly started flying around his face it then turned off to the left so Adam followed it.
It lead him through the woods and soon the moans of the sinners were distant echoes circulating throughout the forest.
The butterfly then disappeared into the night sky. "Shit!" Adam whispered to himself. He then checked his surroundings, there was a small pond in the center of a ring of trees.
"Keep moving," Austin whinged. That struck a cord with Adam. He flung his foot back and launched it into Austin's face leaving him lying down with blood streaming from his nose.
"Listen hear you pile of shit, you might think your in charge of everything that goes on around here but believe me your far from it, the minute you fucking interfere or hurt anyone I will peel your fucking face off!" Adam yelled in Austins face. Austin stared at Adam. "I could tear you apart right now with my bare hands but I'm not so consider yourself lucky,"
Adam continued walking without Austin.
He wandered around for about five minutes without regretting his past decisions, he then heard a call in the distance. "ADAM!" He responded with "Over here!"
Adam ran through the woods and out onto the path. "Adam!" Georgie said. The two guys were behind Georgie. Adam approached Georgie. "Where's Austin?" One of the guys said. Adam frowned "He got bit by a mutant." No one seemed to care at all. "You get all the sinners?" Asked Georgie. "Nah we got sidetracked and now there all in the woods," Georgie shrugged "Oh well."
One of the guys pulled a pair of binoculars out of his pocket. "I think if we wanna keep living by the lake we gotta have people on watch," the guy said. Georgie nodded "That's not a bad idea Frank."
Adam looked off into the dark gloomy woods and suddenly regretted his decision of leaving Austin there. Then he remembered what Georgie said when they were traveling to Kentucky, 'It's survival of the fittest' Adam gulped it's more like survival of the ignorant. Thanks for reading and I'll probably start posting chapter nine throughout the weekend.
