"J-Just a sec!" I said, shoving everything else in the closet and closing it.
I sit in my chair and roll it over so no one would be able to see the plastic tub from the doorway. Not a moment later did mom open the door.
"Hi sweetie." Mom said, coming in.
"Hey mom." I say, leaning back in the chair, trying to be 'casual'. "How was your day?"
"It was a day." Mom said with a half-laugh. "How about you? You haven't done anything drastic today have you?" I knew she was referring to the fire rescue from yesterday. Meaning that she was not going to let it go for a while.
"Oh, you know; just recognizing I have powers by throwing my dresser into the ceiling and myself into a wall by avoiding it. Oh, not to mention I've been floating over my bed for the past couple of days when I wake up in the morning. So Nah, nothing too drastic." Of course, I couldn't tell her that.
"Nope. Nothing eventful." I said with a smile. I notice that mom looks really tired. What did they make her do today? "Are we going to order pizza tonight?"
"Hm?"
"You look really tired."
"I am." Mom said, sitting on my bed. Before she could look up, I roll my chair in front of the plastic tub. "I'm sorry. I was planning to make lasagna tonight with dad, but I don't think I'm up to it."
"It's fine," I said. At this point, I'm just trying to delay the inevitable question of what had happened to the costume. "I doubt dad will be up to it either."
"You're probably right." She sighed. "Does Torleena's pizza arena sound okay?"
"Yep."
"So, how did the costume turn out?" Mom asked, taking her black hair out of the bun she had tied it in this morning.
See? Called it.
"It didn't turn out quite how I was hoping, so I don't think I'll ever use it. I think I already threw it away."
"That's too bad." Mom said. "What was it going to be if it had worked?"
"I was thinking... a superhero?"
"Auh, that makes sense." She stood up. Reaching over, she rubbed my head. "You can be a bit of a perfectionist sometimes." Walking toward the door, she smiled back at me, and again, I moved so I was blocking the tub.
"I'll let you know when we call for pizza." She said.
"Okay. Love you mom."
"Love you too." And with that, she was gone and my door was closed. I let out a gust of air and slumped in my chair.
After a minute, I get up and crack open my door. Not seeing anyone close by, I sneak out of my room and quickly grab the hot glue gun and sticks from the hall cupboard. But once it was in my hand, I stopped. What I was doing was risky. If I worked on the costume and mom walked in, I'd be in trouble. But if I worked on the meteor pieces and she came in, oh, just end me now. She'd go into a panic seeing me with blonde hair and aqua eyes. She might even think I was someone who broke in. I put the glue gun back in the cupboard. I'll have to do it later.
Just then the front door opened and my dad's voice called into the house, sending Ginger into an ecstatic panic to greet him.
"You're home early." Mom said from the couch.
"It was a slow day so I got to head home early." He said, walking into the living room. Just as he was about to find a seat next to mom, he saw me in the hall.
