"Hey give it back!" Yelled a small voice. I turned my head so I could see what was going on. Some others did too but as soon as they saw what was happening they turned and hurried away. But I was not one of them. My hands curled into fists and my teeth clenched. Rage filled me with a burning heat, nearly taking over my body. I sighed allowing some of my anger to slip away with it.
It was a Monday afternoon, our last break between classes before the end of the day. And yet again, the big bully Menchera was picking on another little kid. Last week it was a kid a year younger than us, a 5th grader, and now it was a 1st grader!
"Or what?" Menchera taunted, "You'll run home and cry to your mommy?" He laughed as did his 'friends'. If you could even call them that. I walked up the hill they were standing on that was right by the school building.
"Menchera!" I called as I was getting closer. He and his buddies turned around. "Leave the kid alone! And give him back his ball!"
"Oh sure." He smirked. He turned back around as if to act like he was going to give it back. Then he suddenly whirled around and threw the red rubber ball at me as hard as he could. Luckily I had seen it coming. I caught it just before it hit my chest.
"You know that I'm good at catching during dodge ball," I said, pushing past him. I smiled at the little boy as I knelt down and handed him the ball. "Here you go."
"Thanks." He beamed. His smile soon faded however as it was replaced with a look of horror before he started to run. I quickly found out why. I felt a hand grab my shoulder and pull me to my feet by my shirt and turned me around. I was now face to face with one of Menchera's biggest friends. They called him Bone Breaker but his real name is Billy.
"Hey, Billy," I said.
"It Bone Breaker!" He spat. He had already let go of my shirt but now his hands were tightening into fists.
"Why are you holding back? Afraid of a girl?" I said, a plan forming in my mind. Billy definitely isn't the smartest kid in our class but he is one of the strongest. If it was someone else, say, a guy, he would have already started to pummel them, and all of his friends surrounding us knew it. Some of them laughed or snickered at the idea but stopped when he glared at them.
"Bone Breaker scared of nothing!" He growled. He drew his hand back but before his fist could come in contact with me, I jumped out of the way. Tripping, I end up landing on the ground as a large CRACKing sound came from the wall that had been behind me. A groan of pain escaped from Bone Breaker's throat. I peered over my shoulder to see what had happened. Turns out that 'Bone Breaker' might have broken some of his own bones. When I saw what he had done to the wall, I was very happy that I hadn't still been standing there.
The grey brick wall now had small cracks where he had it. I scrambled to my feet as Billy began to rub his knuckles. He looked up at me with a deadly rage pulsing through his eyes. I could see a vein popping out of his forehead. Before he could do anything to get revenge, the bell rang, summoning the students to return to their classes.
"Come on Sireana," someone called out. I turned at the sound of my name to see one of my closest, best friends Dencha. She was standing next to Porsha and her sister Mincy, my other best friends. They all looked really worried, I couldn't blame them. My heart was racing inside my chest and I thought for sure it was going to jump out of my throat and say hello to the world.
"Y-Yeah, come on, we don't want to be late." Said Porsha. I nod and calmly walk over to them.
"Yeah, that's right! Run away you chicken!" Menchera yelled then started to do a chicken dance and bocking like one too.
"You sure I'm the chicken?!" I shout back as I entered the building.
We stopped at our lockers to get our stuff for our next classes. Porsha and Mincy's final classes were different from mine and Dencha's. Not to mention on the other side of the school and their teacher did not tolerate tardiness. They said their goodbyes and left before we did.
"You're going to get hurt one of these days you know," Dencha told me.
"I guess," I said, pulling out my science notebook and textbook. "But I want to help those who need it or just can't defend themselves, you know this." I stood up and pushed my locker shut with my foot as we walked down the hall to our class.
"Yes, but still..."
"You still worry about me."
"Yeah."
"You're a true friend." I laughed putting my arm around her shoulder. Once we were in the class, we hurried to our seats and opened our notebooks. The bell rang again and class finally began.
Boy, was it boring! It was just a short lecture with notes, then a document with guided notes. It would have been better if I sat next to Dencha but I don't. Because assigned sitting would never allow it.
As I walked home after school, I thought about all that had happened today. All 'n' all, it was a pretty good day. I got a passing grade on my math test, the school had a spelling bee and Mincy got first place, and I managed to stop Menchera from bullying someone. It made me smile and I even started to hum walking the rest of the way home.
When I stepped onto my front lawn, my husky bolted out of her doggy door to greet me. I knelt down with open arms and she jumped into me, knocking me to the ground. I gave her a big hug as she licked my face with her big, slobbery tong.
I let go of her and she grabbed my bag that I had put down next to me and took it inside, her big fluffy tail wagging as she went. Ginger, my husky, and I have been doing this ever since she was a puppy. Back then she had to drag it across the grass to bring it inside. But I never trained her to do it. I watched her until she disappeared through the door.
Once she was gone, I stood up and brushed myself off. I had only taken a few steps before a large thundering noise scatters across the sky. I stop and looked up, thinking that it might be a storm that could be heading our way. Only thing was, there wasn't a single cloud. However, it wasn't completely clear. I smiled as a meteor began falling down to the earth. I had seen shooting stars while camping with my family, but never during the day. I thought it was kind of neat to see one while the sun was still out. That is until I noticed where it was heading.
My heart sunk to the pit of my stomach and I took off toward my front door. I made it about halfway across my yard when I looked over my shoulder, but I was too late. I was thrown to the ground, my face digging into the cool dirt as unimaginable pain ransacked throughout my body.
All I could hear was the roaring thudding of my heartbeat and the fading sound of someone's voice screaming, but their voice was too far away for me to hear what they were saying. My head was aching and everything was a complete blur. I couldn't move, I could barely even breathe, it felt like thousand-pound needles were stabbing my back. Slowly, everything slipped away, it became quiet and dark. So... very... very... dark...
