*Mike's POV*
I was woken the next morning to the sound of someone knocking on my door.
"Come in." I groaned as I sat up.
Natalie poked her head inside, but when she noticed that I wasn't wearing a shirt her face flushed and she left.
"Um, good morning."  She said shyly "Jane made breakfast if you're hungry."
"As a matter of fact, I am."  I responded as I put my shirt back on.
"Also, me and the girls were thinking about going into town later tonight.  Since you're the new guy, I was wondering if you might wanna come?"
"Sounds like fun.  Besides, I think I might need a new shirt."
Clockwork poked her head in my room again and laughed when she saw the claw marks in the fabric.
"I think you're right.  We're heading out at ten pm."
"Gotcha."
I went downstairs and immediately spotted Jane washing dishes in the sink.
"Morning."  I yawned.
"Good morning."  She replied "If you're thinking about getting breakfast, I'm afraid you're too late.  Jeff's a big eater."
"No biggie.  I'll eat later."
I grabbed an apple out of the fridge and ate it.
"So Natalie invited me to go into town with you guys."  I mentioned, "Who all is coming with us?"
"Let's see, Clockwork, Lulu, Nina and me."
"What about the guys? Are they gonna meet up with us later or something?"
"No. When you live in a house full of boys for as long as we have, sometimes you just need a break."
"If you say so. I'll be outside if you need me."
"Okay."
I walked out the door and sat down on the porch, then closed my eyes as the wind blew through my hair. It felt nice. I'm not sure how long I was sitting there, because I felt someone tap my shoulder. I opened my eyes and looked to my left. Sally stood next to me with a Tails plushie held tightly to her chest.
"Are you okay?"  She asked worriedly.
"Yeah, I'm okay."  I assured, "Just got a lot on my mind."
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
"Nah.  I'll be fine."
"Okay."
She smiled and went back inside. My gaze wandered over to the garden and I could see Lulu tending to the blooms.
"They're beautiful."  I complimented.
"Thank you."  Lulu responded with a smile "I planted them myself.  Did you have a garden in your universe?"
"Me?  No.  My girlfriend did, but I was never patient enough to take up the hobby."
"You had a girlfriend?"
"I did.  Her name was Ellie.  She worked as one of the researchers at the facility I was being held in.  She's probably moved on by now, seeing as I've been dead for a year there."
"Do you miss her?"
"Of course.  She was one of my best friends after all."
"Well, maybe you'll see her again someday."
"Maybe.  So which one's your favorite?"
"Oh.  I like the tulips."
"Any particular reason?"
"Not really, I just like them.  Do you have a favorite?"
"No.  Never had much interest in plants or anything like that."
"Don't you have a hobby?"
"I didn't have a lot of time to myself. Between tests and deployments, I barely had enough time to read what few books I owned."
"Deployments? You were a soldier?"
"Of sorts. But I'd rather not get into that right now."
I stood up and walked away.
"I'll be out back if you need anything."  I called over my shoulder.
I rounded the corner and dropped my shirt on the ground, then I raised my fists to my face and started swinging.  I shadowboxed for two solid hours before I went back inside. Jack was laying upside down on the couch watching Animal Planet on TV.
"Hey." I groaned as I cracked my neck.
"What do you want matchstick?" The proxy spat.
"Are you always this rude? Look man, after whooping your ass the other day I can understand if you're not entirely happy having me around, but you don't have to be such a douche."
"Noted. Now, what the hell do you want?"
"Which way to the shower?"
"Up the stairs, third door on the left."
"Thanks."
I left without another word. I followed Jack's directions and went inside. There was a large walk-in shower in the left corner, a bathtub to the right, and a sink connected to a toilet on the left.
"How did they afford all this?"  I muttered.
I stepped into the shower and turned on the water.  I washed myself off and stepped out, then raised my body heat to turn the water on my body into steam.  I threw on my clothes and went back to my room to look over the files again.  96 wasn't the only anomaly to get sent here, and he wasn't going to be the last one to come for me.  A lot of things can happen when you're the Foundation's lab rat.  Make a few friends, but you make even more enemies. That's especially true in my case. I've gone toe to toe with almost every anomaly in the files at least twice.  Then there are the ones that weren't in the stack.  I couldn't remember how many I've fought, I lost track around fifty.  Then there's the Foundation's habit of losing their captives.  I held my head in my hands as I began to understand just how much trouble I was in.  There was a knock at my door and Clockwork poked her head inside before she opened the door the rest of the way and walked over to me.
"Everything okay?"  She asked.
"Yeah."  I huffed "Yeah, it's just...I got a lot on my mind right now."
"Well, it's almost sundown.  If you're not feeling up to it anymore, you don't have to come with us.  We can always go into town another time."
I looked out the window and sure enough, the sky was a warm orange and yellow.  How long have I been sitting here?
"No, I'm still going."  I groaned as I stood up "Besides, stretching my legs a little might take my mind off things."
"Great! The others and I will be waiting for you out front."
She left and closed the door behind her.  I checked myself in the TV screen, then went after her.
"Everyone good to go?"  Jane asked once I was outside.
We all nodded and followed Jane into the forest.  There wasn't a set path, which was probably a good thing, so the terrain was pretty rough.  It took us about ten minutes before we stepped out from behind the trees and stopped on the side of a road.  On the other side of the blacktop was a town that stretched along the shoreline for about two miles.  It was so quiet, I could hear the waves as they crashed into the sand.  The sound was beautiful and the smell of seawater only made it better.  There was a time when I had hoped to see the ocean for the first time with Ellie, and although she wasn't with me, I was still just as happy.
"It's beautiful." I said.
"Maybe from here, sure." Nina grumbled, "But once you take a closer look you won't find anything remotely close to being beautiful."
And she was right. Once we made it into the city all the beauty had disappeared. The entire place smelled horrible, and it wasn't because of the low-tide. The streets smelled like shit, literal shit. A glance into a random alley and I saw a massive pile of garbage bags. I gagged a bit.
"Told you." Nina huffed "It used to be a lot nicer, but the town turned to crap about a year ago."
"You've been here before?" I asked.
"My family used to come here every year during summer vacation. My mom would get a tan, my dad would build sandcastles with my brother and I would go swimming. Boys were staring my way all the time."
"I find it hard to picture you in a bikini."
"I've still got it if you wanna see it."
"Nobody wants to see your bikini, Nina." Clockwork interrupted.
"Says you! You're just jealous because Mike wants to see me in a bikini and not you."
"That's ridiculous. Besides, you don't have anything to show off, flatty!"
"You wanna go tick-tock?"
"Enough, both of you." Jane ordered, "We're here."
We stood outside a department store, which had probably closed hours ago. Clockwork got on her knees and tried to pick the lock, but after a few minutes, she groaned in irritation.
"They must've changed the locks." She huffed as she stood up.
"Or maybe you're not as good at picking locks as you think." Nina scoffed.
"Knock it off already." Jane ordered "Arguing won't get us anywhere. We'll just have to find another way in."
"What are we looking for?" I asked.
"New clothes for you."
"Is that all? I can handle that, no problem."
I looked up and smiled at the sight of a vent sticking out of the wall.
"Time me." I said.
I burst into flames and jumped into the vent, then dropped into the building.  I quickly ran into the men's section and grabbed a backpack, a black and red hoodie with a flaming "F" on the back, a faded pair of jeans, and a pair of black high tops.
