*Mike's POV*
I stared out the window of the van, quietly watching the rolling hills of North Carolina as we moved down the road. Jane was sitting in the passenger seat next to Jack while Soul was passed out on the bed behind me. I glanced over at Clockwork and watched her as she wrote in a small notebook. We had been on the road for nearly four hours without so much as a pit stop.
"The fastest route takes us down to Georgia, then through Louisiana." Jane informed, "If we don't stop too often we should reach the border in two days, tops."
"I get that we're on the clock here, but you're not seriously suggesting that we spend this entire trip, are you?" Jack asked.
"You have a better plan?"
"Yeah. We take our time and actually try to enjoy ourselves."
"I agree with Jack." I commented, "I can think of a couple of abnormalities that could be on the road to the border, so it'd be a good idea to take a look around now and then."
Jack looked at Jane and gestured to me as if to ask 'See?'. Jane sighed and held up her hands in defeat, then returned to her map. The next few hours passed by in silence, save for the scratching sound of Natalie's pencil and Soul's light snoring. Eventually, the sun set and we pulled into a rest stop with a massive parking lot. I turned around in my seat and whacked Soul's leg with the back of my hand.
"Up and at 'em metal-head," I mumbled.
Soul snorted as he woke up and watched as everyone got out of the car. He groaned and crawled off the bed, then followed the others to the bathroom. Meanwhile, I gave myself a few minutes to stretch. Once I was done I leaned against the van as I waited for the others to get back. The parking lot was completely silent, with not a single car in sight. We were alone and in the open. If it had been under different conditions, I would've considered the solitude to be a good thing. My eyes narrowed as I looked around, watching for anything that moved. I didn't see anything except for some birds and a squirrel, but I kept my guard up anyway. I felt someone tap my shoulder and I turned to see Natalie holding a flyer in my face. The handout had "CLUB PHOBIA" on the top in gothic red font. Below it was a picture taken from inside a nightclub. I took the paper from Natalie and looked at her skeptically.
"So?" I asked.
"It's a Proxy nightclub." Jack explained as he walked up to us.
"What makes you say that?"
Jack tapped on the picture and I looked closer. On the back of a barstool was a circle with an "X" in the middle.
"We were thinking about going there tomorrow night." Jane said, "Have you ever been to a nightclub?"
"No, but they say there's a first time for everything." I muttered, "I'm in."
"Guess we should hit the hay then." Jack groaned "I'll see you guys in the morning."
We all said goodnight and one by one, followed suit. I was the last person to go to bed, choosing the bottom bunk with Natalie. Just as I closed my eyes, an image flashed in my head. I saw my mom, smiling at me as my dad stood beside her. Their faces suddenly changed and the life disappeared from their eyes as blood ran out of the corners of their mouths. The image changed again as what sounded like white noise filled my head. I stood over my parents' bodies and tried to wake them up to no avail. My hands were so small, like I was a child. Then everything went white and my eyes shot open. I had to force myself not to scream as I gasped for air. Natalie shifted beside me, apparently woken up by my heavy breathing. She propped herself up on her arm and slid closer before placing her hand on my chest. I looked at her as my breathing started to slow.
"You all right?" She whispered.
"Yeah...yeah." I shuddered "Just a bad dream."
"What was it about?"
"I saw my parents. They were dead, but I was a child."
"Sounds like a pretty weird one."
"I-I guess so."
Natalie tilted her head slightly, then kissed my cheek and rested her head on my chest. I smirked and wrapped my arm around her as I laid my head down. Within minutes Natalie was fast asleep, though I was still struggling. The images brought some unpleasant thoughts to my mind. The Foundation knew about Abaddon, but why hide him from me? Why do I have nightmares about watching my parents die right in front of me? I carefully eased my way out from under Natalie, then left the van for some air. I pulled up my hood and crammed my fists into my pockets as I walked towards the rest station. The blacktop bubbled under my feet as my frustration grew. Just as I lost sight of the van I snapped and punched through the wall of the building.
"YOU ARE UPSET." Abaddon stated.
"Of course I'm upset." I growled as I pulled my hand out of the wall "I've got about a million questions in my head and I can't answer half of them because I don't know anything!"
I went to punch the wall again, but stopped myself and sighed loudly.
"Do you remember anything about us?" I asked sadly, already knowing the answer "Who we were?"
"I AM SORRY BOY." Abaddon replied, "I DO NOT."
I slumped against the wall and bowed my head as tears threatened to fall from my eyes. I was barely keeping myself together at this point. I didn't know anything about who I was before the Foundation and on top of that, I now had two memories of watching my parents die. Which one was real? Were either of them real to begin with? Were my parents still alive after all this time? I felt Abaddon place his hand on my shoulder and I raised my head slightly to look at him.
"WE WILL FIGURE THIS OUT." He vowed, "I SWEAR."
I nodded and laid my head against the wall as I looked up at the night sky.
"It's nice, sitting out here like this." I said, smiling a little "A lot better than having psychos run at me with swords or some crap."
I sighed and closed my eyes as a cool breeze washed over me.
"Hello?" A woman called.
My eyes flew open as I jumped to my feet, my eye glowing brighter than ever. My heart pounded against my ribs as I looked around wildly. I was alone.
"Is someone there?" The woman called again.
I turned in the direction of the voice and followed it away from the rest stop.
"Ellie?" I called from the edge of the woods.
Suddenly, the woman screamed in terror and I broke into a run.
"Ellie!" I shouted, "Where are you?!"
"Help! Someone help me!" She screamed.
I sprinted through the forest, trying to find where the voice was coming from, but every time I thought I caught up to her, the voice picked up again somewhere else. Before I knew it, I was lost. The voice kept screaming, begging for help. I was about to lose it when I noticed that her voice was getting louder, and there was more than one.
"My little troublemaker." A woman cooed affectionately.
Her voice made my ears ring loudly, causing me to fall to my knees. A man laughed and my ears rang louder. The voices felt so familiar, but I didn't know why.
"Mike?" Ellie called behind me.
I looked back and felt my blood run cold. Slowly moving towards me was a four-legged monster with translucent red skin and standing about eighty-six inches tall. Each of its four limbs ended in three-fingered claws with a fourth, opposable finger. It had a long head with no eyes or eye sockets and its jaws were lined with red, glowing fang-like teeth.
