*Evans POV*
Steph continued sobbing into the crook of my neck as I walked out of the alley with Able and Soul behind me. I pulled out my phone and dialed Jack's number. It rang three times before he answered.
"Hey." He said quickly "Did you find her?"
"Yeah." I replied "Meet up at the hotel in ten minutes. There's no doubt Zalgo sent one of his —"
"Duck!" Soul yelled as he pushed me to the ground.
"Duck?" Able asked as he looked around "Where?"
Before Soul could say anything to him, a sledgehammer collided with Able's face and knocked him off his feet.
"Able!" I yelled.
I turned to look at who threw the hammer and felt my stomach drop. Zero and Puppeteer stood a few feet away, both looking visibly pissed.
"Jesus Christ you guys are relentless!" I groaned "Look, can we not do this now? I've got a kid here and she's pretty freaked out."
"We know, and that's why we're here." Zero spat "Hand over the brat."
Sigurrós looked at me for a moment, then tightened her hold on me.
"Yeah, that's not gonna happen." I said firmly "Sigurrós is my responsibility and there's no way in hell I'd hand her over to you. That being said, Soul, take the kid and get to the rendezvous point. Able and I will finish up here."
"Yes, sir." Soul complied "Come on little one."
Sigurrós looked at me worriedly as Soul took her and I smiled warmly.
"I'll be okay." I assured.
She nodded a little and held onto Soul as he ran off.
"No, you don't!" Zero yelled.
She ran after Soul, but I threw up a wall of flames to block her path.
"The girl is mine." Able said as he got to his feet.
"Good." I replied, "I've got a score to settle with Pinocchio anyway."
My sword exploded into my hand as Able pulled out a two-sided battle-ax. I charged at Puppeteer and he fired his strings at my body in retaliation. I sidestepped to the right and severed the strings before I kicked him in the gut.
"Is that all you got?" Puppeteer spat.
"Not even close junior." I laughed.
Fire exploded through the soles of my feet; tearing apart my shoes as I shot towards him like a rocket. I crashed into him and flew through a nearby building before hurling him into another. I floated to the ground and walked through the hole I had made. Puppeteer was slumped against the remains of a couple of desks with his chin resting on his chest.
"You weren't even worth the time." I sighed "You barely even put up a fight."
Puppeteer looked up at me and smiled weakly, then threw something at my chest. I grabbed the object before it could hit me and looked at it.
"A necklace?" I asked, "This supposed to be some sort of apology gift?"
"This was my last chance to prove that I could still be useful to Zalgo." Puppeteer coughed "So kill me or spare me, I can't go back. The charm on that necklace will help you find Stripes, Zalgo's first kid. She always knows where her dad is, so if you can get her to talk she'll tell you where to find him."
"Why tell me this?"
"I'm already a dead man, so it's free game. Zal-Zalgo's found three of the freak-shows you've been hunting. The bear, the opera mask, and the old geezer. If you wanna stop him, you're gonna have to find Stripes."
Able walked in, dragging a barely breathing Zero behind him. He propped her against the wall next to Puppeteer and her eyes fluttered open. Puppeteer smiled weakly as he took her hand and squeezed.
"You may as well kill us both now." Puppeteer said, "Zalgo'll take his time when he finds us."
"You saying that for your sake or hers?" I asked.
"Bit a' both."
Puppeteer laughed, then started coughing up blood. I looked down at my feet as I thought about what I should do. They'd die if I left them and they'd die if I brought them with me.
"Be honest with me Able." I said somewhat sadly "What do you think we should do?"
Able looked down at them and shook his head.
"There are too many risks if we bring them with us." He said, "Killing them now would be merciful."
I nodded and knelt between Puppeteer and Zero, then placed my hands on their shoulders as I looked at Puppeteer.
"Thanks for the tip." I said, "I'll make good use of it, I promise."
Puppeteer just smirked and chuckled softly as my hands flashed and the pair blew away on the blood scented wind.
"Let's get outta here." I grunted as I stood up "Orleans is done."
"Definitely." Able agreed.
We made our way back to the hotel and just as it came within sight, I was hugged tightly by Sigurrós.
"Hey, kid." I sighed.
"What happened?" Jack asked, "Soul told us you got jumped by a couple of Zalgos proxies."
"It's fine." I replied, "Let's just get on the road and get to the border before Zalgo does."
"About that, we're gonna need a bigger van." Jane commented "The old one's too cramped to fit another person, even someone as small as the kid."
I groaned and ran my fingers through my hair as I looked at the small van.
"Yeah, alright." I sighed "Able and I'll look around, and we'll see what's around. The rest of you, stay in the van. If something gets close that isn't us, you drive off. No matter what."
Able and I broke off and scoured the city for a good several hours before I saw an Entegra Cornerstone.
