Sun Hyang
The car flies into the night towards Daeseong-dong. In less than forty-eight hours, the meeting will take place, and if I don't attend it, all the efforts we'd put in over so many years would be spoiled for nothing.
I watch Baekhyun: asleep like this, he looks like an angel. A really sexy angel, I must add. The poor lad is trying to get some rest as best he can, having barely slept during those three days of unconsciousness on my behalf.
Our intertwined fingers, pressed against my thigh, make me smile tenderly. He's won, and somehow, I don't feel like I've lost. When I look at him, when I kiss him, when I tell myself I love him and he loves me, I feel a thousand times stronger than before. I'm not implying anything like I'll turn up at the meeting unarmed, shouting Peace and Love through heart-shaped lips – I'm relatively down to earth. I just have this new wish to fulfil my mission, but most importantly, I want to make it out alive. That's new for me: someone's waiting for me, someone would be sad if I died, someone that's not the old hag from the admin department who would whine about all the paperwork they would have to file if I passed away. I have a life, someone else to care about: I can live, someone's worth it now.
It's sad, but when you're a special agent, you have to face death so often that you only have two options: either you realise the cost of your own life, and then everything scares you – everything becomes a menace, and you can't live anymore, afraid of all the things that might kill you. Or, like me, you throw yourself, body and soul, into that cause, you live for it, attach yourself to nothing else, and sacrifice the value of your existence to your work. Because no one cares for you, and that your life means nothing to anyone. Except the admin lady.
Now, I know my life is important to him too. Baekhyun has threatened to kill me if I die, so I'll try to stay alive. The likelihood of my success is small, but why not try it? I want to have a chance with him. I want to go back to Seoul, and see where this relationship goes. I want to see what it means to love.
I accelerate my pace: we have to be on time. We'd tried to leave as early as possible from the old couple's abode, but we'd also had to find a car. They had kindly took us in their tractor until the next town, where we... 'borrowed' a car. Baekhyun had grunted, saying it wasn't fair, so I told him that corrupting a federal agent by making her fall in love with him wasn't fair either, and he didn't find anything to retort. See!
I laugh softly at this memory, and glance towards him again. We're clearly deep in shit right now, and our deaths will probably be agonising, but for nothing in the world would I trade my place. For nothing in the world would I regret this encounter with such an unbearable man.
"Are you done gazing at your wonderful and perfect boyfriend? I know it's hard, but you have to focus on the road, Sun Hyang..."
He opens his eyes, and looks at me with that little teasing smile I had missed so much. I bite my lip, caught red-handed.
"Boyfriend? Who spoke of such a grade?" I smile mischievously.
He immediately straightens up, and stares at me as if I had just committed the most atrocious crime ever.
"What? You can't be serious?! Did you see how I fought for you, I've earned that grade, come on!"
"Oh, really?"
"Yes! You're mine, and vice versa! Don't even think about saying the opposite for a second!"
"I'm not a conquered country, Baekhyun..."
"We are in a strategic alliance!"
"Oh, really?"
"Sir, yes sir! And you've even given me varied proof of our alliance..."
