ONE WEEK LATER
Meryl

It's a cold day.

The snow falls lightly in soft piles outside of the window.

Suddenly I hear a knock on the door.
My parents door.

I get up and answer it because nobody else is home.
I bite my lip when I see Maks standing outside.
His nose and ears tipped with red. His cold breath leaves his mouth in small puffs of air.

"Hey." He says, smiling.

"I think you should go." I say quietly, looking at my feet.

"Mer! I came to apolog-"

"Maks I'm pregnant!" I blurt out before I can stop the words.

A shock runs through his body and he takes a step back.

"What?" He says, praying he heard me wrong.
That I didn't say it.
That there was some other explanation.
He knew he wasn't the father.

There isn't.
He isn't.

"Maks, I'm so sorry!" I say, crying now.

"No." He says flatly and takes off running.
I run after him but slip on the ice.

My knee throbs in pain as I lay on the sidewalk and watch as the best thing in my life slips away.
