Zoe Finn
Five years prior
"I'm sorry. This just came so suddenly and if I had known I would take you with me." He took a deep breath.
"You," I swallowed my sob, "You're leaving me? With her?"
The man that gave me my other X chromosome shook his head and slightly smiled, "No Kangaroo, I'm going to be back. I promise you I will be back."
"But it's New Years, you will stay for the party, right?" I asked quietly.
My wonderful father looked down to me, "Roo I'm sorry my flight leaves in two hours."
"Dad you're moving continents away, and leaving me with the holy terror, and you can't," I just stopped and stared at him, "you will come back for me right?"
"Of course love, I would miss you too much." The laugh lines deepened when he smiled at me.
"Good," my voice cracked, "I can barely spend a day with her, how will I last until you come back? Who will come stargazing with me?"
"That's just for you and me." He sighed, "Zoe, she's your mother."
"Dad, she is the devil reincarnated."
He let out a booming laugh, "You know you're kind of right."
"How did you ever do the deed with her?"
He playfully hit my arm, "ZOE she was hot! We went over this!"
I laughed, I was definitely going to miss this man, until he comes back, "I just don't understand why you can't take me to Australia too, I mean my nickname is Kangaroo."
"Woah that rhymed."
"Dad."
"Sorry, roo you know I would take you. But c'mon I think a new year is a perfect time to start fresh." My father smiled.
"So, I guess I'll just try and start fresh?" I said it as if it was a question.
"That's the ticket, my kangaroo. I love you. I swear I'll be back." He smiled and hugged me, "What kind of candy is never on time?"
I was already smiling at his hug, but the bad joke made me beam, "I don't know, what kind?"
He smiled wide, "Choco-LATE!"
I laughed while crying this whole goodbye being so bittersweet.
--
After I waved goodbye at the terminal of the airport,
I knew he would be back.
"So," I spoke through my tears to no one, "new year, new start."
