"Why is Lei playing here?" Meizuo and Ximen looked down at the courtyard where Lei stood playing his violin. It felt like almost the entire school gathered behind them to watch, and it was then they realized that Shancai was standing in the courtyard too. "Is Lei playing the violin for Shancai?" Meizuo asked, and he instantly looked around to look for Daoming Si. But the crowd was too thick, and Meizuo shrugged, thinking that if the entire campus was seeing this, it was impossible that Daoming Si wasn't somewhere here either.
Lei kept his eyes on Shancai as his performance was coming to a close. He had timed everything properly, and things were going according to plan. Finally, he drew out the last notes from his violin, then he stopped and looked at her. "Shancai, I dedicated it to you," he declared, making sure that everyone heard it. Shancai looked surprised. Of course she did. She knew they were just friends and would never be anything more. "What are you doing?" she asked as he stepped to her and drew her close. "Don't--" Before she could say anything more, he whispered in her ear, "Shancai, there is a car waiting at the back entrance of the school. Si is waiting for you there. This performance was a distraction so that Si could put his plan into motion. I'll be filling in Ximen and Meizuo about their parts of the plan after this. We needed to keep everyone in the dark." This performance also gives me an alibi for what's to come, he added to himself. He felt Shancai relax, and he said, "I'm going to kiss you on the head to give everyone something to talk about. That should distract them enough for you to get away." He felt her nod, then he pulled away and looked at her with a smile. "Take care, Shancai," he said, and kissed her on the head. "Thank you, Lei," Shancai said, then she turned and walked towards the back entrance of the school.
She tried to keep herself from running to look natural, when all she wanted to do was run to Daoming Si. Finally, she arrived at the back entrance. There wasn't a soul in sight except for a white car she didn't recognize, and the love of her life leaning against it. His face lit up when he saw her, and she rushed into his arms. "I thought we would never be together again," she said tearfully, and he smiled. "Stupid girl," he said affectionately, "Do you think I would really let that happen?"
Then his face turned serious. "Shancai, I just got off the phone with Mrs. Yu. There's been a fire at my house. All of the staff made it out alive, but Mother was in her bedroom fast asleep when it happened. The fire fighters arrived too late to save her. She's gone," he said. Shancai gasped, but a part of her felt relieved that the one person who could ruin everything was no longer around to ever mess things up for them. She looked up at Si, and her jaw dropped when he said, "She was a horrible woman. I'm glad we're finally free." He looked at her and said, "Am I horrible to think that?" She shook her head slowly, and as they took in each other's expressions of horror, guilt, and relief, they burst out laughing. "Let's go, we have no time to lose," Si said.
Si and Shancai got into the car and sped down the highway. "Take it all in, you won't be seeing this for a while," Si said as he drove and Shancai watched the Shanghai cityscape rush by. They arrived at the airport quickly, where they were met by Ximen and Meizuo. "Xiaoyou packed all your things, and your parents have been relocated to a safe place. My bodyguards will keep an eye on them," Ximen said as he pushed Shancai's luggage into her hands. Meizuo stepped towards Si and handed him an envelope. "Your tickets are in there, together with your new passports," he said, and Si took out the passports and opened them. He smiled, "Looks like I'm Dylan Wang now." He gave Shancai her passport, "And you are Shen Yue." Shancai smiled up at him, "I like that name. Dylan... DiDi!" The way she said his new name made him smile and he teased, "Let's go, YueYue! We don't want to miss our flight."
They bid their friends goodbye and stepped into the airport. The next few hours went by like a blur and before they knew it, Si and Shancai were sitting inside the plane, waiting for take-off. "Where are we going again?" she asked Si. "Who cares? All that matters is I'm finally with you," Si replied with a smile. The plane began its ascent, so Si and Shancai fastened their seat belts and leaned back. They were finally at peace, and would live happily ever after.
