"Hey, Jay."
Jay turned at Sam's voice, her heart skipping a beat at the sight of him. His eyes were shining, his hands fidgeting nervously at his sides, his bear-like stance small and vulnerable. He cleared his throat once, twice, three times, before opening his mouth to speak.
"Jay-"
"Did you know there's an arcade in the town major?"
Sam blinked. "What?"
"There's an arcade in the town major. I've been wanting to go for a while, but didn't want to go by myself. Maybe you fancy taking me?" Jay carried on putting her clothes away. She was trying to play it casual, as if she were unaffected. She hoped it was working.
"Um, okay, sure." Sam looked slightly stunned.
"Cool. See you at three?"
"Today?!"
Jay laughed. "When else?"
"Yeah, right. Okay. See you at three then."

——— At three ———
Sam stood in the main hall, fidgeting with his phone. The clock had only just hit three, but he was already having doubts. Maybe Jay wasn't going to turn up- maybe she's realised she was making a massive mistake. I mean, who would want to date an oversized, dysfunctional, dependant-
"Hey."
She was here. She was here!
"Hey," he cleared his throat. "Hey."
"You ready?" she looked gorgeous, the light illuminating her from behind and basking her in a soft glow. Her hair was twisted up into a braid, blue flowers in her hair matching the blue sweater she was wearing. Her jeans were ripped- whether she bought them like that or the holes were the result of her hunts, he wasn't sure.
"Yeah..." he felt underdressed in his usual flannel shirt and jeans, though Dean had assured him this morning that he "looked rocking, man".
"Well, come on then," she grabbed his hand- her hands were rough and calloused, though strangely felt good against his skin- and pulled him towards the door. They headed into the crisp air, the sun hot on their faces. Sam slid into the driver's seat, the worn leather of the seat burning, heated by the sun.
The car roared, and suddenly they were flying, the bunker nothing but a smudge on the distant horizon.

Sam was out of his league. He had always prided himself on the fact that he could destroy Dean at any shooting game they played, but Jay... man, was she good. She was bound to be, considering that shooting things was basically her job.
"Come on Sam! You can't expect me to do everything," Jay grinned, shooting down another zombie. "I thought you were meant to be good at this!"
"So did I," he muttered. Deciding that he was not going to be beaten by Jay, Sam stepped closer, narrowing his eyes. He allowed himself a single second to root himself to the spot, inhale, exhale, allow everything to slow down. It was a technique he'd been using for years, and never failed him. He looked up to the screen, raised the gun, and really let loose.

Jay stared as Sam annihilated the onscreen zombies. He looked focused, his eyes flitting and his posture somehow tensed and relaxed at the same time. The zombies fell quickly, and soon they were onto the next level. Sam wasted no time, shooting down zombie after zombie. He was the ultimate killing machine. Jay whistled.
"Whoa there Hunter. Easy now. Leave some for me," she laughed. Sam made no move that he'd heard her. Jay frowned, stepping closer, and was startled to see that his eyes were completely blank. "Sam?" He stayed lifeless. "Sam? You in there?" Another zombie fell. "Sam?" Jay gripped his shoulder. Sam jumped, dropping the gun and sliding back, his character dying as the zombies overwhelmed him.
"Jay?" Sam looked mildly dazed.
"Yeah... you okay?"
"I don't..." he shook his shaggy head, rubbing his eyes. "Sorry, I was kinda..." He waved his hand.
"In the zone? Yeah, I noticed," Jay laughed. "It's cool, you don't have to apologise. I know the feeling." Sam nodded gratefully. "You hungry?"
"Actually, yeah," Sam smiled. "I know a great Chinese restaurant a couple minutes away." Jay grinned.
"Great!" She grabbed her coat, and pulled Sam out the door and into the warm sunshine.
