" Lou! What size Christmas tree do you want?" Amy called. Lou came out of the bedroom. " Well, It should be very full and thick, and maybe about seven feet tall," Lou replied. " Ok, I'm waiting for Ty to get back from town and then we'll go find you one." Amy told her. Lou nodded. " That'll work great," she said. " Are you guys going to walk?" Amy laughed. " Oh, no. We're going to take the horses. If we find a tree we like, grandpa and Ty will go get it later with the tractor", Amy answered.

An hour later....
" Amy, I'm back!" Ty called. Amy hugged him and said, " Come on, Lou is
getting impatient." Ty laughed. " Ok, let's go! Are you ready?" Amy nodded and they walked hand in hand to the barn.

20 minutes later...
" Ty! Did you see that!?" Amy gasped.
" No, why?" " Ty, I just saw something move over to the left!" Ty and Amy slowly dismounted and walked cautiously towards the fallen down barbed wire fence. Amy gasped again.
" Ty! It's a horse! And she needs help
extremely bad!" " I see her. You stay here with her. Keep her calm. I'll get Jack and the wire cutters. Try not to let her move around." Amy nodded grimly. Ty quickly mounted his horse and set off at a gallop towards the barn. " Easy, girl." Amy soothed as she gently stroked the horse's side. " Help is on the way." The trapped horse looked up at Amy with wide frightened eyes and a look that plainly said, " please help me!"
A few minutes later, Ty and Jack came cantering back . They skidded to a stop and leaped off their horses. " Amy," Ty panted. " I need you to hold her still. Don't let her move. If she does, she'll be injured a lot worse. Jack, you help me cut the wire off her." Amy and Jack both nodded and sat quietly so not to spook the injured mare. While Amy calmed her, Ty worked quickly and carefully at cutting the wire that held her prisoner. " You poor thing. How in the world did you get in such a mess? Well, don't worry. Ty will have you out in a few minutes." Amy cooed.  Finally, Ty held up the end of the wire. " Done!"
He announced. Amy breathed a sigh of relief. Amy,with Ty's help, carefully buckled the halter on her head.
" Ty, I'll call Lou and tell her to call Scott." Amy said. Ty nodded. " Great idea," he answered. Amy fished out her phone with numb fingers and dialed Lou's number. " Lou.... hey, it's me.
Listen, could you please do me a favor and call Scott? ..... I'll tell you later. We have an emergency. .... no, no Ty and grandpa and I are fine. Ok, thanks. Tell Scott to be there ASAP! Bye." Amy shoved her phone into her pocket and went to give Ty and Jack assistance in helping the hurt mare up. When they finally got to the barn, Lou was waiting outside for them. " Amy! What's the meaning of this? I...." Lou stopped short. " Oh my goodness ! The poor baby! What happened?" " Lou, I'll tell you later," Amy interrupted. Just then,
Scott's Jeep pulled into the yard. Scott jumped out, vet bag in hand, looking very concerned. " Oh, wow. Quick, let's get her into a clean stall so I can have a look at her." Scott said. As Amy led the horse down the aisle, she thought about what might have happened if she and Ty hadn't been looking for a Christmas tree. " Let me take a look ," said Scott once she was in the stall. He then listened to her heart and lungs, ran his hands gently down her legs checking for swelling or heat. He shook his head. " This poor girl. She's going to be a mom, but after all she's been through, all we can do is hope that the foal, and her make it." Amy looked at Ty, her eyes wide. " I can't believe we didn't see that! I mean, her belly is huge!" Ty shook his head and laughed.
"Well, I guess we were too busy focusing on saving her rather then on how fat she is." Everyone burst out laughing. After taking care of the cuts, Scott headed inside with Lou to drink some coffee. " Amy, you were a real hero today. I couldn't have done it without you," Ty told her. Pulling her close, he gently kissed her. Jack walked into the barn. "Ahem" he cleared his throat. Amy and Ty jumped, startled. Jack struggled to keep a straight face when he saw how much he had scared them. " Get him!" Amy laughed. They chased Jack with handfuls of hay that they threw on him. Panting and laughing, they collapsed against the hay bale, out of breath.  " Hey, who's having a party in here?" Said a voice.
"Dad!" Cried Amy as she leaped up to hug her father. " Hello Tim." Jack didn't sound very happy.
