"That was nice of you to stick up for Amelie Peter."
The young boy nods, not really paying attention to what his friend said but rather, he was more focused on getting to Amelie before she left the class and disappeared into the crowded hallways.
"I didn't think she was the type to talk." Ned continues on with his small rant, following his friends gaze to the girl in question, "She always seemed like a quieter and less sassier version of Michelle. Always keeping to herself and very shy. I mean, I talk to her a couple of times since we have chemistry and english together and we're locker buddies but-"
At that moment, Amelie passes them, slipping into the crowd and becoming one with it. Peter internally groans, he really wanted to talk with her before lunch. They didn't have another class until last period.
Ned notices this and chuckles, "You wanted to talk to her?"
"Y-Yeah."
Ned thinks for a moment, "You could stop by her locker. It's right next to mine, remember?"
************
Peter tries to map out how a conversation with Amelie would go.
And he concludes that it could go far more worse than his made-up conversations on how he'd ask Liz out.
How would he go up to her? Would he just be like, "Hey! I know you have weird light powers!"? That would mean that he would tell her that he's Spiderman. And he does not want to do that.
Spiderman and Peter Parker must be two different people, totally parallel to each other.
So, how is he going to start this conversation when the only thing that's intrigued him about her is the abnormal ability to mess with light particles?
This was going to be a lot harder than he though.
And Amelie was just about finished at her locker.
So Peter did the only thing he could think of, and he'll probably regret it later.
"Hey Amelie!"
The whole hallway goes silent at the sound of Peter's loud voice. No one really ever heard Peter speak so loud, it was so out of character of him to do so. So why was he doing it now? And calling a girl that never likes being seen? The whole hallway had to know.
Meanwhile Amelie tenses up at the sound of her name, not wanting to turn around. She can feel all eyes on her and she doesn't like it. Not one bit.
She clutches the straps of her backpack tightly, ignoring the slight glow they start to have. Amelie turns suddenly, only to be face to face with Peter Parker, the shy boy in her English and Chemistry class.
She blinks slowly and noticing the close distance, she tries to control the slight glow in her hands, "Can I help you Parker?"
Crap.
Peter didn't think she'd respond. And now everyone was looking at them.
His eyes widen, staring at Amelie's disinterested face, "I-I.....uh wanted to ask you something."
"Okay," She looks around at all the people, starting with hungry eyes for gossip and a need for invading people's lives, "Why don't you ask me with less people around?"
Amelie grabs his hands, which sparks him a bit but he ignores it, and drags him away from the crowd, the only thing heard from the crowd is Ned cheering, although Amelie's not sure why.
Meanwhile, this is exactly what Peter needed. To talk to her one-on-one without anyone. But would he even dare talk about her abilities? She might be too scared. She might think he's crazy and he'll never really know for sure.
Once they're away from the crowd, Amelie lets go of his hand and the spark and the warmth leave too. He wouldn't admit it out loud but Peter though it felt........nice.
"So, what did you want to tell me Parker?"
Peter instantly tenses up. He almost forgot about this. He holds onto the straps of his backpack tightly and takes a deep breathe. He wants to talk about the truth, even if it meant revealing that he was Spiderman but his brain screamed at him to lie.
So he lied.
"I-I was just wondering if you were okay after what happened in English class. A-And if you wanted pair up for the next assignment." He eases up a little bit despite his stuttering, "I've seen your notes once and you're really smart when it comes to this Shakespeare stuff. I could use the help."
Oh. Amelie didn't expect that from him, the smartest guy she's ever seen. (Apart from her brother-in-law.) He usually pairs up with Ned in literally every class. Why would he want to pair up with her? Something didn't seem right.
"Peter, are you feeling okay?" Amelie asks, her hand almost hovering over his forehead to check his temperature but she decides against it, "You always pair up with Ned. Why me this time?"
He shrugs, his insides turning violently at his continuous lies, "Just wanted to change it up this time. Ned says it's okay. So, you wanna work together next time?"
Amelie stares at him with an incredulous look but nods slowly anyways, "Sure Peter. I don't mind."
Peter smiles brightly at her and she almost feels herself smile back at him. His smile was so contagious, she couldn't help but let a small smile escape her.
"Great! Until next time then!!"
Without another word, Peter zooms off to tell Ned the good news, that he talked to her, leave Amelie alone and wondering why he was so hopeful she'd agree to be partners with him in English.
She hopes it's not what she thinks it is and gives her the most terrible feeling in her stomach.
