Chapter 5

Rosefire and Patchfrost were sharing a vole by the fresh-kill pile. Swanwhisker trotted over to them. Rosefire looked up. "Hello Swanwhisker." He said. "How are you?"

"Amazing!" Swanwhisker replied. "I'm expecting kits!"

Rosefire looked at her like his mother had sprouted wings. "What?"

"I'm expecting kits!" She purred. "Rosefire, Patchfrost! You're going to be big brothers and sisters!"

"Who's kits are they?" Patchfrost asked.

"Pikeclaw's again. Just your father."

"Oh." Rosefire meowed, a grin on his face. "Ok. I'm happy for you Swanwhisker, and I'm excited to have small littermates to play with." Patchfrost nodded. "Me too."

Swanwhisker had moved to the nursery, because her kits where coming in a moon or two. Rosefire had just come back from border patrol. A small gray-and-white kittypet had come on to their territory, but nothing more. Patchfrost poked her head out of the warriors' den. "Hello Rosefire." She said. "How was patrol?"

"Good."

"That's good."

"I chased a small kittypet away, so that was fun."

"Wow. Was it that ginger one from a while ago?"

"No. It was a fluffy gray-and-white she-cat."

"Oh. Want to share a robin?"

"Ok."

Two nights later, Swanwhisker's kits came very early. Rosefire couldn't sleep. He was scared Swanwhisker was hurt. He jolted up when he heard Fergus say, "You have a daughter."

A moment later he said, "You have another daughter and a son."

Rosefire walked out of the warrior's den and towards the nursery. Swanwhisker had three kits curled up by her side. Rosefire started purring. He stopped when Fergus said; "I'm sorry Swanwhisker but only one of your kits survived."

Swanwhisker let out a cry of sorrow. "How?" She cried. "The tom is still alive, but he is weak." Fergus said calmly. "I'll check on you soon." He left the den. Rosefire curled up by his mother. "Can we call him Bravekit?" He asked. "I think it suits him." Swanwhisker looked up at him and purred, "I think so too. Let my son's name be Bravekit."
