Chapter 10

Rosefire leapt onto a brown tom who attacked him with the teeth-grip. WindClan was attacking. The brown tom tried to fling Rosefire off his back, but Rosefire's claws were stuck too deep to let go. Alderstripe rushed over to Rosefire to help him. He attacked the WindClan warrior with the Front-paw-blow. Rosefire slid off the tom's back, as he limped away. "Thanks." Rosefire meowed. Alderstripe purred. "Anytime. Come on!" They both ran over to a black tom who was fighting Pineclaw. Rosefire hit the black WindClan warrior on the muzzle, as Alderstripe got his tail in his jaws. Pineclaw whacked the black tom's paws, causing him to fall. Rosefire heard a crack. Did his paw just break? Rosefire thought. The WindClan tom got up shakely, gave a look of plead to Rosefire and his Clanmates. "Let him go." Rosefire growled. "We've done enough damage already." Pineclaw and Alderstripe nodded, and the black tom walked off.

"WindClan! Retreat!" Called the deputy, who was leading the battle patrol. "We did what we wanted to!"

Rosefire tilted his head. We did what we wanted to? What does that mean? A cry sounded from the other end of the camp. Rosefire, Alderstripe and Pineclaw rushed over to see Honeystripe and Whitewind leaning over the body of a red-brown cat. Heartstar! Rosefire thought, panic flooding through him. He ran over and saw what had happened. Heartstar's left ear was torn, and blood dripped onto his head. What concerned Rosefire the most, was Heartstar's throat. A long, bloody scar ran all the way from his muzzle, down his throat and over to his right front paw. "Honeystripe, tell me what happened!" Rosefire demanded. Honeystripe looked up at him. Heartstar's daughter looked pretty battle-scarred. "I tried to save him, but Maplestripe... The deputy flew at me. My father jumped in front of me, and Maplestripe killed him!"

Rosefire gazed at Heartstar's lifeless body. "Heartstar was a noble leader. May he find swift running and endless hunting where he rests." Alderstripe came up behind Rosefire. "Hawkcloud and Swanwhisker are dead too." He said. "Hawkcloud died saving Swanwhisker, but Swanwhisker was killed as well. I'm sorry Rosefire."

Rosefire looked up at his mate. "Thank you Alderstripe."

"Rosefire," Whitewind said, "You are leader now. You need to get your nine lives."

Rosefire nodded. "I will. At moonhigh tonight, I will go with Fergus to the moonpool."
