"Let all cats old enough to catch their own pray, assemble beneath high-ledge for a Clan meeting."
Rosefire looked up from the vole he had been eating and walked over. Swanwhisker emerged from the elders' den where she had moved just two sunrises ago, and Alderstripe came to sit beside his mate.
Heartstar looked down on the crowd of cats. "You all know, that I lost my eighth life to greencough."
All the cats nodded. Heartstar continued. "It has also taken Skyclaw from us, so it is time to make a new deputy. But first, Bravepaw, please step forward." Rosefire's apprentice did as he was told. "Even though Bravepaw has not yet completed his training, he is the age to receive his new name. I now hail Bravepaw by this new name. Bravepaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Bravewind. StarClan honors your loyalty and bravery and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan."
"Bravewind! Bravewind!" The Clan cheered. Bravewind's amber eyes lit up as he gazed over to Rosefire. Rosefire purred. His brother would be a loyal warrior. He knew it.
"Now, I need to appoint a new deputy. I say these words before the body of Skyclaw, so that his spirit may hear and approve my choice. Rosefire will be the new deputy of ThunderClan."
Rosefire looked up at the Clan leader. Why him? He went up onto the high-lege and said, "Thank you Heartstar. I never thought I would gain such a high rank. I will serve all of you as best I can. From the smallest kit, to the oldest elder."
"Rosefire! Rosefire!" Cried the Clan. Rosefire and Heartstar leapt down from high-lege. Patchkit, Birdkit, and Sweetkit trotted over to him. "Wow!" Birdkit squeaked. "Good job!"
Frostflight walked over to them. "They are growing well Rosefire." She purred. Her own kit, Fawnkit staggered over to them. Her fawn-colored coat shone brightly in the green-leaf sun. "Come on!" She cried. "Let's go play!"
The kits rushed to go play mossball, as Frostflight padded after them.
"Rosefire, can you take out a hunting patrol please?" Heartstar asked. "Of course!" Rosefire called back. He trotted over to the warriors' den to ask some warriors to join his patrol. Pineclaw, Alderstripe and Graytail agreed.
They set off to the hunting grounds. Rosefire and Alderstripe took the lead, while Pineclaw and Graytail walked behind. Rosefire saw a small movement in the trees. A squirrel! He thought. Signaling to his patrol, he dashed up the tree after the small creature. He got it by the neck and killed it with one bite. He brought it down and buried it by the base of the tree to fetch it later. Pineclaw and Alderstripe were chasing a hare, and Graytail was stalking a mouse. Rosefire purred. He was glad Heartstar made him deputy. He was glad that he had three kits, and he was glad he was proudly ThunderClan.

After they came back, they put all of their prey on the fresh-kill pile. Rosefire took a sparrow for himself. He walked over to Swanwhisker. She was sitting by the elders' den. "Hello Rosefire." She said. Her voice was full of grief. Rosefire tilted his head to one side. "What's wrong?" He asked. "Your father, Pikeclaw is getting sick. He has greencough." Swanwhisker said. "Fergus doesn't think he'll make it."
Rosefire looked down at his paws. "I know Pikeclaw is an elder. I didn't expect him to be going so soon." Swanwhisker nodded. Rosefire looked up as Fergus padded out of the elders' den. "How is he?" Swanwhisker asked. "He's dead." Fergus meowed. Swanwhisker sighed. Rosefire glanced over at Fergus. The medicine cat started to walk away. "Wait!" Rosefire called. Fergus looked back. "What is it Rosefire?" He asked. "Sweetkit is taking an interest in you and your herbs."
"Yes?"
"Fergus, when she becomes an apprentice... Do you think you could be her mentor?"
Fergus looked shocked. "Do you really think I'm ready for an apprentice?" He asked. "My old mentor, Mouseear only told me how to do a few things until she was killed by a monster on her way to the moonpool. I don't think I can have an apprentice!"
"So when you die, ThunderClan will be left with no medicine cat?" Rosefire asked. "I think not."
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, assemble beneath high-lege for a Clan meeting!" Heartstar called. The Clan walked over. "Today," Heartstar began, "we are making four new apprentices. Patchkit, come forward."
The small black-and-white tom did. "Pineclaw." Heartstar said. "Featherclaw was your mentor. Pass on all he taught to you to Patchpaw.
"Now, Birdkit, step forward."
Birdkit did, his ginger pelt vibrant on the green grass of the camp. "Alderstripe. You are ready for your first apprentice. Please pass on all your skills to your son, Birdpaw."
Rosefire purred as Alderstripe and Birdpaw touched noses.
"And, Sweetkit." Heartstar meowed.
The tiny tortoiseshell she-kit prodded forward.
"Fergus." Heartstar said. "Sweetkit has asked to be the Medicine Cat apprentice. Please pass on all Mouseear told you to Sweetpaw."
Fergus purred. Giving a look of pleasure to Rosefire, Fergus said, "Yes, Heartstar."
"And lastly, Fawnkit."
Fawnkit trotted towards Heartstar.
"Whitewind. You are ready for your first apprentice. Pass on all Pikeclaw taught you to Fawnpaw."
"Patchpaw! Birdpaw! Sweetpaw! Fawnpaw!" cheered the Clan.
Rosefire's kits looked up with glee. Looking towards Alderstripe, Rosefire noticed his mate was not looking as happy has he could.
"What's wrong?" Rosefire asked. Alderstripe looked up at him. "I'm just... Well, Petalstorm is expecting kits. But no cat really knows who her mate is."
"Hmm." Rosefire thought. "That is weird. Petalstorm isn't really the cat that wound do that."
Alderstripe nodded.
"Are you excited to have Birdpaw as your first apprentice?" Rosefire asked. Alderstripe nodded again.
