Chapter 9

You both sat in absolute silence as Angel drove. You knew the path he was taking wasn’t going to be taking you to your house. You knew this for a fact when he pulled up outside of a hotel and casino you had never entered.

He tossed the keys of the car to some poor valet and took your hand, guiding you inside the hotel. Not a word was shared between the two of you. You just looked at his hand, his fingers intertwined with yours. With his usually sand coloured skin blushing madly red, Angel took you to an elevator and pressed a button.

You were taken to a higher floor, maybe 12 or 13. You weren’t really paying any attention. Angel guided you roughly to a door down the hallway. He opened the door and set you on the queen sized bed in the suit after closing the door behind you both. He released you hand at last and kneeled in front of you.

“YN,” he nearly whispered. “Are you okay?” You glared at him.

“As if you care,” you muttered just loud enough for him to hear. Angel clenched his jaw and stood up.

“You’re right,” he stated, looking out the window at the outdoor pool lying far below. Families on vacation or couples played in the light blue waves without a care in the world, no idea what was happening so far above them. “I don’t.”

He glanced back at you, his face hardened back into his usual grimace towards you.

“Take a shower,” he said. “Your makeup is smeared, and you have dried blood on your lip.” You sighed and took off the fur coat he had set on your shoulders and retreated into the open bathroom door.

There was a jacuzzi bathtub and a standing shower that looked like an alien pod. Clean, folded, white towels waited on the counter. Stripping your dress, you glanced at yourself in the mirror but quickly looked away. You didn’t want to see yourself like this. Blood, makeup, might as well be a painted whore. You were doing all of this for the money.

You were selling yourself to him. The thought made you shiver. You hated this situation and you didn’t want this. As you stepped into the shower and started the warm water, you began humming a song you remembered from your youth.

“Why does the sun go on shining?” you sang softly, the warm water running down your skin and clearing your face. “Why does the sea rush to shore? Don’t they know it’s the end of the world? ‘Cause you don’t love me anymore.”

Angel stood outside the door, your coat clutched in his hands. Your voice fluttered through the door like a songbird and he felt himself tremble. Why did you make him feel like this? Every time he saw you, ever since yesterday, he felt his heart flutter and everything stop.

But he wouldn’t dare tell you that. You’d leave him if he did. So he stayed quiet and tried to be… well, mean. If he was mean, you’d think he didn’t like you at all. But he did like you. A lot. Either way, keeping you close was more important.

Angel leaned against the wall, hearing your voice continue singing through the door.

Why do the birds go on singing? Why do the stars glow above?” He slid down to the floor, your coat still clutched in his hands. He buried his face in the fur of the coat, just breathing in your scent. Why were you so addicting? “Don’t they know it’s the end of the world? It ended when I lost your love.”

He knew exactly what this feeling was. He knew as soon as he saw you leaving the school, the sunlight making your (s/c) skin glow and your (h/c) hair illuminate like majik.

Goddamnit, YN. He was in love with you. But there was no way in hell he would ever let you know. You would leave him. He knew you were there for the money, because your parents had agreed with his parents that this engagement would be beneficial for both companies.

“I wake up in the morning and I wonder,” your voice brought him back to the moment, listening to your voice from outside of the bathroom. His face buried in your fur coat, his gift to you, and he moaned from stress. “Why everything’s the same as it was. I can’t understand, no, I can’t understand. How life goes on the way it does.”

Before he knew it, Angel’s eyes felt heavy. He wanted to close them and drift off to sleep with the sound of your voice. Even more, he wanted to join you in the shower, touch every curve of your body and tell you exactly what he thought of you, not the lies he spat at you.

“Why does my heart go on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry? Don’t they know it’s the end of the world? It ended when you said goodbye…”

“I’ll never say goodbye, YN,” Angel breathed into your coat before laying his head against the wall behind him. “I’ll never let you go…”

Why does my heart go on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry? Don’t they know it’s the end of the world? It ended when you said goodbye…” The water stopped running. Angel’s heart jumped and he threw the coat onto the floor and jumped onto the bed, laying in a way to look like he had fallen asleep before you left the bathroom.
