~Chapter 11: The Boy With Scarred Wings~
Outside the castle walls, after the crowd chased after a winged foe, Lumina stood against the wall, head down and arms crossed. Danny stood in front of her, arms folded as well. After witnessing the anger expressed for Leif’s feat, it left them both in shambles. Danny bit his lip, trying to process what had just happened, while also thinking of what to say. Lumina remained quiet and looked as if she were about to slump down and burst into tears.
The sound of dirt crunching approached them with a definitive sound of a happy strut. Out from the castle walls appeared a boy with sandy-blonde hair wearing a blue polo shirt with a singlet beneath and old tattered pants with hints of cuts in them. He walked up to them happily with the widest grin his cheeks could allow.
“Whaddup brother and depressed-looking chick!” he sang, his ignorance of what happened was evident due to the rainbows and sunshine that were around him. “Hey, guess what? There was a demon here! Like, the actual demon Fuyu! I even threw a rock that I saved juuuuuust for him!” He laughed so hard, that Danny was about to deck his face.
“Although I missed,” he added, mumbling.
“Goddammit Ross,” Danny heatedly grasped his arms. “That was Leif.”
“Oh.”
Ross’s smile fade and the rainbow and the sunshine turned to grey. He looked away and bit his lip, making an ‘uh-oh’ face, although his eyes definitely shined with sunshine. He avoided eye contact with his angry brother. He looked over at Lumina and thinking that she was somehow involved, he looked away and shut up to avoid awkward conversations. But he soon forgot how to shut up and continued to speak.
“Sooooooooooooo,” he dragged on, “how’s life?”
“Damn it Ross, Leif’s flown away with a mob of angry townspeople chasing after him after he tried to help the king but was assaulted by the peoples and you – oh you – went and through a freaking rock at him while you strut your stupid happy ass out here and totally did not sense the damn urgency here!” Danny yelled at Ross, making him feel like he was shrinking with ever guilt-tripping comment about him.
Ross had his head buried between his shoulders as he lifted his finger and spoke in a whispering way in a high pitch kind of voice. “Can you repeat that in a way that I can comprende?”
Danny gave him a cold stare and swore at him. Ross looked down in shame and began to apologize. Danny told him to apologize to Lumina as well, who was still looking down, but she rejected him and continued to sulk.
Her heart was sunken deep into the ocean of sadness. She was reminded of what had happened over at her village and what it was like to be called a monster. Pictures of blood splashing everywhere, recordings of screams of pain rang in her head, the feeling of warmth turning into cold-blooded murder.
She shook off the memory as if waking from a bad dream and shuddered. Leif was in trouble, and she promised to make them both stronger, and so looked up and ran off towards the city. Danny and Ross, still fighting over Leif’s situation, only realized she took off a few seconds after and ran after her.
Ignoring the pain in her side from the Siwall fragment, she ran full force, to find him – to find his pain – and soothe him from it. He was hurting not only by the rocks thrown at him, or the swords that cut him, but the people around him shoving their hate on him, while the people he cared for were suffering. While all at the same time, his heart was just screaming out, crying for help and searching for comfort. But it never came. She had once felt this way before, and not wanting to repeat it again, she pushed onwards to find the boy with the scarred wings.
