Chapter 13 - Shocks
As the storm raged outside, they felt safe in the cave. They had lit a small fire with the help of the few branches she could find. Their shadows danced as the flames flickered in the cave.
"This feels good, doesn't it Laksh?"
He nodded in agreement as they sat beside the fire. It's warmth was soothing.
The bear had went away some time earlier leaving them in peace.
Laksh shivered as he huddled closer to the fire. He could not help but feel as if the fire wasn't warm enough. Infact as the seconds passed, he felt more cold than before.
Ragini looked to the side at the branches that were left. There weren't much. She doubted that it would be enough to last the whole night. She was distracted by Laksh's voice
"Aachoo!"
Laksh shivered and hugged himself tigher.
She looked at him in worry. He didnt seem to get much better. Although he was smiling at her, trying to show everything was okay, she could see him getting weaker. His lips were getting blue. Although the fire was warm enough, he seemed to be suffering from cold and a fever. Hence, it wasn't enough.
Ragini knew she could increase the heat by adding more branches. But doing that would mean that the branches would be finished in about two hours or so. They needed it to last longer. Not to mention the fire going all out would mean Laksh getting no warmth at all. 'What if he catches pneumonia? Oh no!'
She took off her scarf and put it around Laksh's shoulder. She herself felt cold as the scarf was no longer covering her. However, she wasn't the one suffering from a fever. Laksh needed it more.
The fact that Laksh too was aware of his terrible condition was proved when he didn't mind the scarf. Usually, he would have said that she should keep herself warm and not worry about him. Also, he would try to keep away as he didn't like getting too close to girls or their things. But the fact that he didn't protest showed how out of state he was.
Ragini placed a hand on his forehead to check his temperature. "Wow. You're hot."
Laksh chuckled. "Thanks. I know." he stopped joking when she glared. "Y-yeah. Seems like I caught a flu."
Indeed he had a fever. Ragini place a hand on his arm. "Laksh, don't worry. Just let the night pass. Once it's dawn, we'll go back to the hotel and get you warm. Just hold on."
"W-warm. Warm sounds...sounds good."
His voice sounded distant. As if he was slowly getting intoxicated. However, she knew it was a delirium he was drowning into due to the fever. 'If this keeps on, he might lose consciousness soon. I need to get him to warm up somehow. If I don't, his condition will worsen further.'
"Y-you look tensed. Am...am I dying?" Laksh questioned out of the blue.
"No! I'm not. See?" she tried to smile at him.
"You're a baaaad liar. Haha...!" he seeker totally out of his senses. The fever was getting to his head.
"Calm down Laksh. You'll be okay." she placed a hand on his shoulder.
Laksh looked at it carefully, as if it was a strange thing. He blinked.
Slowly, he raised his hands and held her hand in his. He turned and looked at her, eyes somewhat glazed over from fever. "Y-you know even...E-even if I die in this c-cave, there is on-ne thing I-I want to do be-before I go."
"Nothing will happen to you. Don't say such things!" Ragini could feel tears in her eyes form from hearing his words.
"B-but we never k-know, r-r-right?" he gave her a bitter smile.
"Laksh..." she didn't know how to reply.
As they looked at each other, he slowly leaned forward.
She just kept looking and sat still as he kept moving closer, her heart thumping in her chest. Her breaths were becoming rapid puffs of air with each second. However, Laksh seemed calm. He just kept inching closer with a carefree smile.
Slowly, as she stared dumbfounded, he closed his eyes. Within a second, his lips were on hers.
Her eyes widened as big as they could as he kissed her. Although it was cold in the cave, Ragini felt her body heat up from the intense emotions she was feeling.
Ragini could feel am onslot of different feelings rushing through her mind in those seconds.
Slowly, she too relaxed and kissed him back.
However, he suddenly moved back.
Laksh sat back down with a goofy smile and looked at her. "You're beautiful."
"Wh-what?"
Laksh chuckled. "I love ya."
Before Ragini could ask anything further, his body swayed and he fell to the side, unconscious, his fever overpowering him.
All Ragini could do was look ahead, as if in a trance, with wide eyes. Her mind was racing with multiple thoughts, putting her in a dilemma.
With her heart still thumping in her ears, she raised her shaky hands to her lips where he kissed her. Only one question rang in her heart and mind.
'Why!?'
