That day Ebony sewed and washed and cleaned and mended the dwarves clothes. She found the simple chores she asked for exciting and wondered how she could thank each dwarf for their hospitality.

Later that same day the dwarves all left, except Seven, to go to work deeper inside the mountain. They told Ebony she would be safe in the cavern where she couldn't get hurt and to not wander, for the caves and tunnels beyond their bright cave home was dark and scary.

She wished them all luck on the journey through the tunnels to the underground mines and got busy herself. She didn't have to do much when looking after Seven and when it was starting to get late she started preparing a lovely dinner for when the dwarves returned home.

Ebony had found many things to do that day to pass the time and when the dwarves walked in all dirty and tired she had just finished laying out the food she had cooked on the long log table. Each dwarf thanked her for it and even Four who couldn't speak hugged her tightly and nodded his head wildly when she asked if he liked the food.

But when One decided to try and wake Seven up for just a bit so he could eat something before going back to sleep he found that he couldn't wake the other dwarf up. One shook and prodded the sleeping dwarf but nothing One did got the other dwarf to open his eyes.

The other dwarves all tried with no success. With heavy hearts they all understood what had happened to their friend. Seven had died. They did not know how or when and they asked Ebony if she knew anything.
"I don't know what might have happened? He'd been sleeping soundly the entire day."

That night the dwarves got to work in building a coffin made from iron and stone, the materials Seven had mined while he had been awake and before he was cursed.

The dwarves wept over their fallen friend and placed him in the coffin and sealed it tight. Then they carried the coffin down a few tunnels and into a room filled with natural light. There they placed the coffin in the centre of the room. Each dwarf said his goodbyes and left.

The remaining six dwarves and Ebony ate the rest of their dinner in silence. Ebony choosing to sit alone by her waterfall.
