"are you excited for summer, ty?" josh asks his best friend while they stand at their shared locker, tyler putting his lunch away for later.
"everyday is summer here, joshua." tyler laughs softly, closing the locker to reveal a very happy looking josh.
"right, right..." josh begins walking next to tyler, "but, we won't have to deal with school, or homework, or responsibilities, and it's our first summer as high schoolers. we can just hang out all the time."
"josh, we already hang out all the time."
"so, you're not excited for summer?" josh frowns.
"oh, joshua." tyler stops, turns to the curly headed boy and grabs both of his cheeks in his hands, "i am so excited for summer."
"warning! girlfriend approaching! seize all homo activities at once!" a loud voice rings down the hall, causing tyler to mentally groan as he drops his hands from josh's face.
"hey, debby." tyler greets josh's girlfriend as she links her arm into josh's, pushing tyler to the side a bit.
"hey, dude." josh kisses her temple, the three of them resuming the walk to class they have together.
"are you excited for summer, josh?" debby asks cheerfully.
"everyday is summer here, deb." josh quirks, earning a stifled laugh from tyler.
"right, but—" she starts but is promptly cut off by tyler.
"but, we won't have to deal with school, or homework, or responsibilities..." he begins, glancing at josh, "and, it's our first summer as high schoolers."
"yeah, and we can hang out all the time!" debby smiles.
"yeah!" josh laughs, "all the time."
truthfully, josh is excited for summer with tyler. so excited.
"we've got to get you a girlfriend, ty-guy! can't have you third wheeling all summer." debby says as she drops her bag to the floor next to her desk, followed by the two brunette boys to sit in the desks behind her.
"first of all— don't call me ty-guy. second— none of you have got to get me a girlfriend." tyler rolls his eyes, kicking his feet up onto josh's desk beside him.
"he doesn't need a girlfriend, dear. he has me, no better girlfriend than your best friend." josh smiles cheekily, causing tyler's heart to swell and debby's smile to drop.
"you're a boyfriend stealer, tyler." she huffs and turns around in her desk.
"i came first." tyler quips, as their teacher, mr. belmont, enters the classroom.
"good morning class— joshua, quit it with the giggling. tyler, get your feet off my desks." he orders as he places his materials on the desk in the front of the classroom, turning on the projector. the class quiets down as he begins to introduce the end of the year project.
"considering most of you will be taking the second part of this class next year, i want you guys to film at least five unique things that you do this summer." he begins.
"so, like, a documentary?" a girl asks from the front of the classroom.
"like a documentary." belmont repeats.
"what are the rules?" debby raises her hand.
"well, don't do anything illegal— or, don't get caught doing anything illegal. don't get arrested, please. um, be appropriate, we will be showing these to the class. don't do it all at once, make the experiences last, this project is meant to break you guys out of your shells and help you discover what life has to offer."
"can we work with a partner?" tyler asks, not bothering to raise his hand.
"can you raise your hand?"
tyler raises his hand.
"it's not required, but yes, you may work with a partner. one partner."
"sick!" both tyler and josh exclaim, giving each other a high-five.
"i will provide you a list with some ideas to get you started, try not to just complete the list. i want you all to explore your options. it's expected that you have a summary at the end, about what you learned about yourself, or your partner, and the beautiful area we live in. the best video will be featured in the back to school assembly. we have spent all year learning how to film, edit, and produce quality content, it's time to put all of that to the test. you have the rest of the period to establish a partner if you wish, and begin brain storming ideas of your own. i'll be handing out the papers at the door on the way out of class." belmont finishes before sitting at his desk.
the class begins to move around; some people forming partnerships, some putting their headphones in and beginning their lists. debby turns around in her desk and puts her notebook on top of josh's.
"hey, babe, can you please not do that? ty and i are trying to start writing out all of our ideas." josh pulls his notebook away, turning and placing it on tyler's desk as tyler scoots closer to josh.
"you don't want to be my partner, josh?" debby sounds hurt, tyler doesn't care.
"we're neighbors, it's super easy to spend all of our time together." tyler explains, looking up at her.
"yeah, it would be really hard to do work on and edit the film, since you live kind of far." josh agrees, continuing to write in his notebook.
"it's a twenty minute drive..." debby says flatly.
"and it's a ten second walk to tyler's." josh laughs, he isn't intentionally being mean. debby gets up from her desk and walks over to one of the other girls in the class to pair up with her.
"yo! you know what would be sick? if we went on a road trip." tyler grins, drumming his hands on josh's shoulder.
"yeah? us and what car?"
"you're getting your license in like two weeks! i bet my dad would let us take the jeep! ooh!! we could go camping! we could go on a hike! josh, i'm so excited for summer."
"so am i, ty. so am i."
