*PETER'S POV*
My heart sank in my chest.
M.J. knew.
She wasn't supposed to know!!!
"Uhh...wait what?" Playing dumb is my go-to response when I'm trying to lie.
She stared at me, a look of confusion playing on her face. She grabbed my wrist and pulled my sleeve back.
My black web shooters gleamed in the light of the street lamp.
She took a step back and started laughing.
Um...why is she laughing? This scares me.
"Are...are you okay?" I asked her, drawing out the last word.
She looked at the sky and threw her arms up. "What is happening right now?"
I grabbed her and lead her towards the door of the restaurant. "I'll explain everything, I swear. Just give me a chance."
We sat down at a booth and ordered our drinks. I could feel the tension between us.
What was I supposed to say?!
Thankfully she started the conversation.
"Why didn't you tell me?" She spoke with her head down, so quietly I could barely hear her.
"I'm sorry." I didn't know what else to say. Do I tell her that I couldn't trust her? That I couldn't tell anyone to avoid harm?
It seems like no matter what I said, it would hurt her.
I didn't want that.
"I can't tell anyone. It's for my own safety," I told her. Was that a good answer?
"You don't trust me? Why don't you trust me?" I could hear her voice getting louder and louder with each word.
Not a good response. Got it.
I was quiet for a while, thinking of something to say.
M.J. spoke up, "Does anyone else know?"
I started fidgeting with my hands and lowered my head. "Ned."
I could feel her eyes burning a hole through me.
"Well... I guess we know who matters more to you now."
"He just discovered it before you did! I didn't tell him."
She was thinking it over, staring at me.
"I swear." I added, hoping that would make a difference.
She sighed and leaned back in the booth. "This is just crazy. I can't believe that you're-"
"Alright we have one water and one lemonade." The waiter was back with our drinks. He handed them out and left.
"You have to keep this a secret. You can't tell anyone." M.J. was a great person, but she was horrible at keeping secrets. That worried me.
"Yeah, I know what a secret is, Peter."
Damn, she was being pissy.
I just slowly nodded and we spent most of the rest of dinner through silence.
She never even asked me if I was okay from the fight.
———————
After dinner I texted Ned.
She knows.
I didn't need to elaborate.
I started my way back to the tower, dreading talking to M.J. again.
———————
The elevator doors opened and I stepped inside. Before the doors even opened on the main floor, I could hear voices.
When the doors opened I saw my dad talking to a blonde kid. Who's that?
I don't think I've ever seen him before.
"Oh there's Peter." Dad pointed me out and waved me over.
"Peter, this is Harley. Harley, Peter."
Harley turned around and shook my hand.
"Nice to meet you, Peter." He smiled.
"Harley's an intern for us this summer." My dad was beaming. "We've known each other for a while. I met him when I was on a mission once in Tennessee. Haven't seen him in years though."
I flashed a small smile and said, "Great."
We'll see how this turns out.
