Chapter Seven
Maid of - Oh, Shit!
The Glass House door slammed shut with an ear-piercing bang. From somewhere in the house, Claire heard Michael's yell of surprise, quickly followed by Eve's warrior-like voice shouting, "Michael, we're under attack! Grab the silver!"
"Idiots," Shane said as he locked the front door, and he checked it twice for good measure. "You know, coming from the two vamps -"
Claire darted off in the next instant, and she distantly heard Shane murmur his displeasure as she skidded around the corner and she burst through the kitchen doors. Michael was sat at the dining table, and his eyes rose from the newspaper he had been reading to look up at Claire with a cocked eyebrow.
"Where's Eve?" Claire demanded.
Michael's eyebrows furrowed, an expression of puzzlement dancing over his face, and he slowly flipped the page of his paper before he answered. "I think that she's in her room. Is everything -"
She bolted once again, flying through the kitchen doors and smacking into Shane on her way through the hallway. Claire felt him try to grab at her arm, but she danced past and tore towards the staircase, taking two steps at a time as she climbed to the second floor. Her heart beat hard in her chest and she felt butterflies dancing and prancing inside her stomach, and she still couldn't decide whether or not the shivers that wracked her body were from shock or excitement.
Claire threw open the door to Eve's bedroom first, a messy concoction of clothes, shoes, and accessories thrown carelessly against the floor and the furniture, but amongst the mess, Eve was no where to be found. She slammed the door shut behind her as she backed out into the hallway again, and she made a beeline for Michael's room at the end of the hall.
She had been told to stay out of Michael's room (he had told her that when she'd first moved into the house and did as he said because she'd been somewhat afraid of him, but she was confident that she could kick his ass if he yelled at her), but Claire, like she had done with all the other doors in the house, rapidly threw open the door to Michael's bedroom. Eve was there, her wet hair stuck against the sides of her cheeks and her neck, and wearing nothing but a bath towel.
"Well excuse me!" Eve exclaimed, and she dramatically pressed her hands over her chest and the space between her legs, despite already being covered by the towel. "CB, we may be close, but I am a married woman!"
"Eve!" Claire interrupted breathlessly, and she hadn't realised how hard she had been panting before she'd stopped in Michael's room. "I need to tell you something."
"No, wait, I need to tell you something first." Eve's once dramatic facade had dropped, and now her face was a painting of sincerity. "Claire, I would never - you know I wouldn't, right? I wouldn't ever want to hurt you and I'm sorry I snapped like that, but -"
"Eve, shush. I'll forgive you if you do something for me."
"Anything."
Claire's lips spread into a wicked grin, and she had already started squealing and rocking on her heels as she demanded, "Be my maid of honour!"
Eve paused, her face frozen in a trance-like state, and she finally blinked. "Maid of - Oh, shit! He didn't?"
Claire nodded her head frantically and thrust out her left hand for Eve to see, the gold band sitting idly on her fourth finger from the thumb. "He did!"
Eve shrieked and she leaped into the air, her new vampiric powers maximising her meant to be small jumps of joy into quick, rapid bunny hops. She pressed her fingers over her mouth, and through them she said, "I can't believe he proposed so soon! He told me he wanted to wait until you were older."
