Finding you will always be the highlight of my life. Those online conversations we had on Twitter, our witty exchange of political and football banter, my flaccid attempt at "shooting my shot", your gracious acceptance of my utter impotence and the start of a friendship destined from the start.
Then I found you. A complete accident, by all means. Abeokuta has this weird habit of threatening thunder and lightning storms for days, until one unexceptional day when the sun is fully out at 10am and by 12pm, the sky resembles the return of Christ. Which is exactly what happened.
It caught everyone else by surprise. But I'd paid enough attention to the cloud formations to bring an umbrella that day. And while everyone crammed into a gazebo to hide from the heavenly sub-machine gun fire, I walked out, fully armored in my Kevlar suit and riot shield. And you were on the other side of the road, completely exposed to the torrential deluge of bullets. The gentleman in me rebelled, and I ran up to your shivering frame and offered you my umbrella.
The best decision of my life.
We didn't recognise each other, which is strange considering how we chatted almost every day. The rain likely prevented us from really seeing the other's face. It was that evening, during our regular debriefings, that it struck you that you'd seen me in real life. We laughed and felt embarrassed by it all. The anonymity of social media. We set a date and finally met, under another thunderstorm, at the library. I didn't know what to do until you hugged me. And everything felt right.
Everything has felt right ever since then. Our first date, our first kiss, the nights I spent in your arms, the days you spent in mine, our first fight, our first make-up, our first time, the first time you told me you loved me, the first time I realised I felt the same way. We've shared some truly amazing memories together over the last three years, memories I shall cling onto forever.
Three years. They feel so full and yet so fast, like when you overeat at a favourite restaurant. I could never have lasted as long as I did without your light leading me every step of the way. If I simply told you I loved you, it would not carry the same weight as it would if you said those three words. Your ability to wrap up a mountain's size of thoughts in a molehill of a sentence... your face when you smiled, cried, laughed, frowned... your eyes that held me in a trance... your lips that taught me that electrocution can be a positive experience after all, your curves that truly made me feel like a natural man, your voice... your voice.... your voice.
When I drift off to sleep, I shall dream of you. You're all I could hold on to in these moments. I don't know if this message will ever be found, but know that if humans could actually walk a thousand miles, I would gladly take up the challenge, if only I could hear your voice one last time. If only I could see you smile, kiss you goodbye and tell you everything will be fine in the end.
I must round off now, I'm running out of paper. In the end, it was worth it. Living, that is.
Because you, my beautiful jade vine, made it so.
Until I see you in my dreams,
Your beloved Aether.
This message was found during a search-and-rescue operation at the scene of the crash site, written by a passenger of the doomed Air Peace Boeing 737 Max flight to Abuja. Unfortunately the burns make it impossible to identify which passenger it was. It is unknown how the message survived the impact, or the eventual explosion. As yet, there are still no survivors. We were concerned that the rain would ruin the paper so we transcribed it into text. A dying lover's note, it appears to be. We will continue the search once the rain stops. Until then, do put this out across all channels. Perhaps the lady can help us identify her poor friend.
