Jacob ran to the nearest store he could find. Clarisse stayed back to fend off the "vampire" with Matthew and Rose. Matthew still couldn't stand and fight because of a deep glass cut in his leg.
He entered the building and ran around to find an important something. Something to defeat the monster. He went down the food isle and grabbed the first garlic thing he saw. Hopefully this worked like it did in the fairytales.
He rushed out to his friends. Clarisse was wrestling with the "vampire" on the ground. The storekeeper yelled after him for stealing, but when he saw the vampire, he changed his mind. Jacob smiled. His smile faded when Clarisse was flung against a wall not a foot away from his face. She fell to the ground and moaned. Getting up she mumbled, "You're gonna have to do better than that to defeat me."
Jacob knew she was right. She was the daughter of the god of war, Ares, for gods sakes.
"Oh my gods, Jacob! Stop standing there doing nothing! Do something!" Clarisse scolded. Matthew and Rose came over to stand with Jacob. Matthew was still dazed and limping, but able to fight. His body sparked with anger. Pedestrians screamed and ran this way and that. Helicopters flew overhead, and police sirens whirred in the distance.
"Whatcha got there, Jacob?" Matthew asked, pointing to the garlic powder in his hands.
"Garlic," Jacob replied. Clarisse laughed. "What?"
"You think garlic is going to stop that monster?" Clarisse retorted. Jacob's face burned with embarrassment.
"I- I thought... I thought it would work like in the fairytales."
"Well, this isn't a fairytale, Jacob. This is reality. Think reality!"
"It's hard to think reality when I didn't think monsters existed just yesterday!"
"Guys! We have more important things to think about than fighting!" Rose interrupted. She pointed to the vampire, who was slowly floating towards them. Matthew's body sparked even more. His blue eyes burned with electricity and balls of energy formed in his hands. His whole body was soon covered in lightning, making an electric forcefield.
Clarisse and Rose were prepared also. Rose had apparently kept spare scraps of metal in her pocket and had tinkered with them to create something. It looked something like a mix of a sword and a gun. He wasn't sure what it was, but it looked deadly.
Clarisse flexed her arms and puffed her chest. Jacob rolled his eyes. What a showoff, Jacob thought, but a deadly showoff too. She drew her sword and snarled.
Jacob prepared too. He summoned vines from the ground and allowed two of them to wrap around his arms, strengthening his punches. The rest we there to attack at his signal. They stood around him like a protective shield.
The vampire stared at them with fury swirling around him. Slowly, but surely, it approached them. Everyone tensed; the police sirens blared even louder as they drew nearer. Suddenly, it leaped.
It aimed right for Clarisse. Bad mistake! She punched it and he flew back hard. Flying through the air, he screeched, landing face first into the street. As soon as he landed, he leaped up and attacked again. This time, aiming for Jacob.
"Jacob look out!" Clarisse screamed. He stretched out his hand and the vines flung at him. They wrapped around him, encasing him in a ball of vines to tight to break. Jacob quickly opened the garlic slice and ran over to the vampire. He dumped the whole thing onto the monster. The creature only glared at him with red, angry eyes.
Knowing that the garlic rendered useless against him, he tried a different technique. He snatched off the hood and exposed him to the light. The vampire screeched and hissed and thrashed, his gray face slowly burning away into ashes. He struggled harder, slipping out of the vines' grasp.
Jacob struggled to keep the vines wrapped around him as he squirmed. Matthew stepped in to help. He formed a giant ball of lightning and shot it at him. The vampire was hit smack in the face and was shot out of the vines and against a building. He growled and stumbled to his feet, half his face turned to ashes by the sunlight. Instead of putting the hood back on, he lunged again. This time, Rose took a shot.
She quickly did some to the device in her hand and set it down. Quickly, it rolled over to the monster. He looked down at the device and laughed a raspy laugh. Harder and harder he laughed at the tiny device that looked somewhat deadly. Knowing a child of Hephaestus, it probably WAS deadly.
The device stretched out a little rocket looking thing. It looked like a tiny missile to Jacob. That made the vampire laugh even harder. He stopped laughing when his face shed another pile of skin from his face. The missile launched.
It hit him hard. It blew him off of the ground, into the sky, and up in the clouds. Matthew took advantage of this, for he was in his dad's territory. He summoned lighting from the sky as the vampire came down. It hit him so hard, he exploded into golden dust, giving the sign that he was indeed dead. The sirens of the police cars came from right by them. They turned to see police crouching by their police cars with guns aimed at them.
They ran like nobody was watching. They zoomed to the airport and shut the doors behind them. The police obviously didn't see them go into the airport because they ran right past them.
Matthew suddenly collapsed on the floor and squirmed in pain. He was clutching his ankle so hard that his knuckles turned white. Clarisse kneeled by him and grabbed him under both arms. She yanked him up and set him on a chair. Jacob hurried to his side. Matthew groaned.
Rose pulled something out of her pocket. No doubt something first-aid. People were staring at them, murmuring among themselves and pointing at them with accusing fingers. Jacob hid his face in embarrassment. A lady walked up to them as Rose started wrapping Matthew's leg in bandages. How she got them was beyond him.
"Hello, my name's June," the lady said. She looked like a messed up hippie. She wore a hideous skirt and a dirty bandana. Her shirt was all kinds of weirdness.
"Hello June. I'm Jacob Froushwits and these are my friends-" Jacob began.
"Clarisse, Rose, and poor Matthew," June smiled. Jacob gaped at her, his eyes golf balls in his sockets. She knew their names! No doubt she was a goddess or something. Maybe sent by the gods and goddesses. She looked familiar though to Jacob. June smiled at him and he counted exactly three teeth in her mouth.
"How do you know our names?" Clarisse asked suspiciously.
"I just know. I've been watching you all since the beginning," she paused. "Let's take a look at your friends ankle, shall we?" She pushed Rose aside and the wrap that Rose was putting on Matthew's ankle hung loosely. Matthew winced as June touched his ankle.
"A break no doubt. Your going to meed this ankle boy. How 'bout i fix it for you?" June smiled her crooked smile, her three teeth standing out prominent. She focused on his ankle and took off the wrap. Her hands gently held his ankle. He shut his eyes closed tightly.
Gold flowed out of June's hands and wrapped around his leg. Everyone stared at her in surprise. Suddenly, Clarisse gasped.
       "Hera!" Clarisse gasped, almost fainting.
"Not Hera, Juno. I'm her Roman version. But yes, Hera, Juno, same goddess," June/Juno said. Jacob had never heard of Roman gods and goddesses. Clarisse bowed, along with Rose. Matthew bowed his head. Jacob felt he should bow too, but he didn't feel it was proper to bow to a Roman goddess when you were Greek.
Clarisse lifted her head and looked at Jacob expectantly. He shrugged his shoulders and turned from her.
"Why are you helping us, Queen of Olympus?" Jacob asked. He thought that since he wasn't going to bow, he should at least call her by a respectable name. She seemed flattered enough for him.
"Oh I just thought you could use a little help," she raised a brow. Clarisse, Rose, and Matthew had stopped bowing and stood. Matthew tried to stand, but toppled back into the chair. "Easy now there child,"
"Gods and goddesses don't help demigods just like that. They usually want something in return. What do you want from us?" Rose asked suspiciously. Juno went back to healing Matthew's ankle.
      "Well, I-" Juno began.
"Of course we wont give you anything. You know why? Because we don't need you help. Go away Hera," Clarisse spat distastefully.
"I told you girl. I'm NOT Hera! I'm Juno!" Juno roared angrily.
"I don't care who you are, go!"
"Clarisse! She's trying to help!" Jacob protested. Juno glowed and turned into a seven foot glowing goddess. People stared at them and backed away. As quick as she got there, she disappeared. Clarisse sighed a breath of relief.
"Let's get going to our flight. It's almost eleven," Rose said and pointed to the front desk. They walked up to the lady at the counter.
"Um, excuse me, uhh-" Jacob looked at her name tag. "Britney. We would like to get our tickets for our eleven o'clock flight."
Britney looked at them with sleep filled eyes. She sighed heavily and started plopping her fingers on the keyboard of her computer.
"Where are you going tonight?" Britney asked unenthusiastically.
"Miami, Florida please," Jacob responded. Typing in more things on the computer, she rolled her eyes. Obviously she hated her job, or she was too tired to care.
"Under what name are you booked?" Everyone looked at each other and decided silently that there was one name it could be.
"Chiron." Jacob stated. Britney raised a brow.
"I'm sorry kids. I don't see a name like that under my list. Try something else or get out," Britney said flatly.
"Uhh.... Jacob Froushwits?" Jacob guessed. The attendant scanned her computer. She smirked.
"Alright you're in. Eleven o'clock flight booked for four? Yes, yes your going to want to head on. First tunnel to the left," she pointed to a tunnel that read words he couldn't read. To him it looked more like miaMi dFlroai 11 c'olkco. Stupid dyslexia, he thought. He guessed it read something like Miami Florida. Britney handed them their tickets.
They headed to the tunnel after saying their "thank you"s to the grumpy attendant and reached the end. Two men stood in front of the entrance.
"What are you kids doing here without adult supervision?" Said the bulky guy. He had blond hair and piercing green eyes. Jacob hated green eyes. Mia had green eyes, and he had hated them ever since.
The other man had red hair and brown eyes. A strange combination, Jacob thought.
"Our parents will be on shortly. They're in the bathroom right now," Matthew lied. The guards raised their brows. The blond haired one rolled his eyes.
"I guess you can go," the ginger said. They walked past while the guards' eyes followed them like a fox watches it's prey in the shadows. They breathed a sigh of relief when they separated into seats. Clarisse went with Rose and Matthew stuck with Jacob.
Jacob chose the seat closest to the window. He rested his head against it and closed his eyes. He heard Matthew sigh deeply beside him. After about five minutes the plane started to move. A voice came over the loud-speaker.
"Attention fliers! We're going to liftoff in T minus 5,4,3,2,1! Liftoff!" The speaker said. The plane roared along the ground and the nose of the plane started to float off the ground. "Flight to Miami is gone! Please make sure you are secure in your seat, your airbag is near you, and you enjoy your ride. The bathroom is in the back. Thank you for choosing Cruise Airline."
Jacob looked out the window. Slowly they began to rise over the clouds. Soon, Jacob couldn't see the ground below. All around them were clouds. They were in Zeus's territory now. He could do whatever he chose to do with them. That made him a little nervous.
"Hey Jacob?" Matthew asked, his voice shaky.
         "Yeah?"
"Do you think that, that my dad will like, shoot us out of the sky or something?"
"Not with you aboard. Maybe if you weren't on here. But I know for a fact that he won't do that because you're his son," Jacob said, trying to calm his own nerves. He tried to believe it himself, but still had his doubts. The King of the sky couldn't be that vile, could he? Jacob tried not to think about it.
"Ok, just checking." They rode in silence for a while until a strange noise came from Clarisse and Rose's seats. Rose's head stuck between the chairs.
"Hey Jacob, you wouldn't happen to have any Advil would you?" her eyes were red like she'd been crying.
"No, why?" Jacob asked. Her face fell.
"My, my ears. They hurt real bad. I'm used to being either on the ground or UNDER the ground. The sky isn't my thing ya know?" Rose said, her head popping back to her own seat.
"Don't worry. We'll be there soon," Matthew said, trying to reassure her. Jacob knew that wasn't true. Miami would be a long ride from New York City. Miami, here we come, Jacob thought. He closed his eyes and immediately fell asleep.
