After hearing those words something inside me clicked. Memories of a little girl on a beach suddenly on the run. If only for a second I was able to remember that seemingly distant memory.
Anger surged through me and I rattled the chains aggressively. I was determined to break out of the metal cup links.
Stronger. I must be stronger.
The sound of metal mashing together echoed through the forest. Clank clank clank.
Wait...
Calm down i need to reserve my strength. "A normal persons strength will never be enough to break out of those chains. You belong to us now." Ryan asserts while giving a wide smile.
"Her powers are useless right?"
Says Caleb from a foot away.
"Of course the reports show of no activity what-so-ever. Her powers have yet to awaken"
"Powers? Are you insane?"
"I'm a plain old regular person! You got the wrong girl!" My screams only repeat themselves back to me from the never ending green that sprouts from up ahead.
"We aren't wrong."
He responds with up most certainty.
"You are one of the rarer breeds of people with powers that can bring down city's or restore natural resources. Personally, I like the destruction part. You're special, unique even. Similar to us but not quite the same.
"Like you in what way?" I spat at them.
He smirks. "Show her"
Caleb then begins to make swift, light movements with his arms, almost hypnotizing. Then I see it.
They're mutants.
Flames engulf one the nearby trees he targeted. After a few seconds it became ashes, waiting for the wind to carry them away.
My face must have shown something since Ryan begins rambling about his power and how Caleb was nothing compared to him.
"You are one of us. We know that for sure." He paused. "Caleb show her the thing." Caleb walked up with some sort of test. "Usually this test is supposed to come out as all red if you have no abilities but look here what color do you see?" "It's all Yellow." "Yellow. Do you know that only a small yellow mark is supposed to appear if you have abilities but yours is completely yellow. The amount of power in your body is remarkable."
"Your father, Mr. Landers said so himself. He even helped us find you."
Pain, Betrayal and hatred was all I felt. These negative feelings brought a powerful force, I kept squirming on the table trying to escape.
"Hahaha, Look at her squirm! Have you ever seen anyone that desperate before Ryan?" Laughing ever so mockingly i only see both men crack up in wholehearted laughter.
I feel a weird sense of strength. Clang!
The sounds of delight fade away as i break free from the chains.
My mind went blank but my body kept moving on it's own as my brain tried to refresh itself. How did that happen? The only sentence floating around my mind in that moment. The sound of their feet running through the dirt smacked me back into reality.
The unrecognizable terrain puzzled me but I kept extending one foot after another forcing myself to breath slowly while I ran. My heart pounded against my chest. Sounds of frustration came from the back. The never ending trees confused me and the sun had almost completely set. Ryan left towards a different path in order to catch me from another area. I ran as flames began to cover the forest.
I'm gonna die.
"Caleb!" I hear Ryan as he scolds him. "Bring the flames down we'll get caught!" His screams reach me from a mile away. I make my way to a big tree and climb.
"Where is she?"
"The boss won't like this." Caleb's voice sounds slightly terrified.
"Shut up! We won't tell him we caught her. Not yet."
Finally at the top of the tree I find a comfy enough spot and sit there.
I'll wait here till they go.
I see Caleb walking alone under me still searching for me.
Thank God for survival class. Though I never put anything I learned there to practice.
A scream sounds from directly under me "You better show yourself! You're looking for a world of pain!" His flames burst from his arms the angrier he gets. He's serious. The sound of tires crushing twigs and leaves becomes noticeable. The van stops by Caleb, he looks around once more before he hesitantly climbs back up on his seat. Ryan presses on the gas and the van gets smaller and smaller till I can no longer see it.
"I'm alive!" I mutter to myself while darkness drapes itself over the forest.
After climbing down I start my way back home. I walk and walk and walk. It's been three hours. My feet ache. My shoes were never meant for the forest, they broke within the first hour of my walk back into town and my foot is starting to blister.
My innards are rambling in ways I never thought possible. My eyes sag and my movement slows.
"I'm tired." I whine, while trudging across the path an unsighted rock catches me by surprise causing me to fall flat on my stomach. The sharp pebbles and rocks under me cut my abdomen. The pain was still bearable... barely. I limped my way through the forest till my eyes went blank. I saw nothing.
I was falling before I knew it.
Not because of a rock but because I was too weak to continue the voyage.
On the floor completely motionless I was left. Was this the end of me? I'm sure the average human can survive having not eaten lunch why is my body shutting down so fast? Blood trickles down my face once again. Ah, that's why. I must have reopened the wound when I fell.
Before losing every sense I had left I notice a shadow and the sound of leaves being crushed. Before i could even see what it was I fell into a deep state of unconsciousness.
Light rips my eyes open. I find myself on top of a bed.
It's not mine.
The bed itself seems... normal?
Am I dead?
I look around the room that i find myself in. There's a bed, a drawer and a light stand, very simple in design but it makes the room quite cozy. The walls were painted a light blue, with the light it looked a bit white. There was one window besides the bed where I was. From the looks of it it was a boys room.
A few comics stuck out from under the drawer and the mirror was covered in pictures of a family and the same boy reappears over and over. I'm guessing this is his room. Should I really stay here after what happened? There was a knock at the door and I swiftly get up and grab the first thing I see.
The handle slowly turns and the door opens. Someone's coming whether I'm ready for it or not.
