Lamar POV

Today was my first night on the job. I started my shift after six, and the bar wasn't crowded.

Guys and girls came into the bar and shortly after left. A few people stayed and took seats—clearly not new here, because they ordered the regulars.

A thick white guy with a long ginger beard and his head wrapped in a bandana put his hand on mine, holding me in a firm grip.

"So what's a person like you doing here?" he asked.

Person like me? I thought to myself.

Did he mean my skin color, or that I wasn't a wolf like him? I really wanted to ask.

Before I could respond, a tall guy walked over and tapped him on the shoulder.

The redneck looked around, and when he saw the guy behind him, he was clearly startled.
"Hector, why are you bothering this fine gentleman here?" he said in a deep Southern accent.

What made my body tingle was the way he said fine. God, I was really feeling him.

"Ah, Beta Dallas, we were just being neighborly—wanting to know what this person of color is doing here," Hector said.

I felt oddly flattered. Person of color? We must be in the eighties, I thought to myself.

"Well, that's not your job now, is it? I suggest you guys turn in for the night," the beta said.

Right after that, Hector and his cronies left. When they were gone, he turned around and smiled at me.

"I'm sorry about them. I think sometime ago he was dropped on his head as a baby," he said, gesturing toward the exit Hector had just gone through.

"It's okay. I get it. I'm something they're not used to seeing, so they're curious. I'm Black—and I'm a witch," I told him.

He raised an eyebrow. "You're a witch? Can't say I've met one before, but if they're all like you, I wouldn't mind meeting more," he said.

I was blushing. If I were a few shades lighter, I'd be red as a tomato.

"I'm half-witch," I corrected him. "How about you? What supernatural are you?" I asked.

"I'm a wolf—and the beta of the pack here," he said smugly. Normally that would turn me off, but not with him.

"So, are you gonna order, or just flirt with me all night?" I asked.

"Can't I do both?" he said with a smile.

"You can try, but I have other customers, Beta," I replied.

"And here I thought we had something special," he said with a sad face. I almost laughed. This was the most fun I'd had with a guy in a long time. I wanted to stay with him all night, but I was on the clock.

"Give me something you recommend," he said.

I gave him a shot of gin—with something special in it that would make even the strongest wolf blood boil.

"So, handsome, are you gonna tell me your name?" he asked.

Without replying, I walked away.

I served other customers, but no matter where I went, I could feel his eyes on me. I should've been creeped out, but instead I was turned on.

What's wrong with me? I asked myself.

After a while, I felt his gaze leave my body, and I could breathe normally again. His eyes alone had me sexually tense—just imagining his hands on my body was enough.

Dallas

I was lonely at home, so I came to the bar my aunt owned. She was the meanest, hardest she-wolf in our pack. I don't know how she ended up with someone as kind as Uncle Ben.

I entered the bar after midnight. Hector and his goonies came in right after me. He was my third cousin—my grandma's nephew. He moved here after his parents were killed by a swarm of vampires and was taken in by my grandma.

Everyone knew he was a fool who liked to cause trouble. In fact, Texas always said, "Every town needs a Hector." That's why I didn't pay them any mind when they started being rowdy.

But when I looked in their direction and saw the most beautiful man in the world, everything else disappeared. His skin was the color of chocolate, his lips plump and irresistible. I needed to see more of him.

As I walked over, my heartbeat picked up. When I reached them, I growled at Hector. I could tell he was harassing my angel.

After Hector left, I took a seat at the bar.

He looked at me, and I could see he felt what I was feeling. He was my mate.

We flirted for a bit before he walked away. I watched him wherever he went. I knew he was a witch, but I didn't want to come off as weird, so I went outside to wait until he finished his shift.

When I stepped into the parking lot, I saw Hector and his friends by their motorcycles, vomiting like crazy.

He must have hexed them or slipped something into their drinks. Just thinking about it made me shiver.

When the back door opened, I called after him.

"Hey, handsome," I said, stopping him in his tracks.
