I stayed against the wall for quite some time, my fingers pressed against my lips.
Did that really just happen?
Did I imagine it?
Did I have butterflies... or was I hungry?
I shook my head, checking to make sure the door was closed, and the bathroom light on. I climbed into bed, grabbed a pillow, shoved my face into it, and just screamed.
Satisfied, that my emotions were in check, I rolled over and closed my eyes.
*******
It's safe to say I was an awkward human being after that Christmas encounter.
I acted, much like he did, that nothing happened, and we went about our normal lives. When I was alone, however, with my thoughts, they always drifted back.
I pondered over that for over a week, and then a more pressing matter came up.
Because nothing says New Year's like a power outage.
It woke me up. I wasn't prepared for it, nor was I quite awake. It was dark, too dark and I knew I had left my bathroom light on.
And what I heard was screaming. Gracie, who slept with at least 4-night lights, screaming and sobbing, out of fear of the dark, Abby crying because Gracie was crying.
I threw back the covers and blearily tried to find and then turn the doorknob. Throwing open the door I ran out into the hallway and collided with a dark mass.
I groaned and felt the mass move underneath me.
"You all right?" Nathan asked, getting ahold of my arm, and moving us into a sitting position.
"Mhmm," I answered holding my head. I could just barely make out his face, in the dark. "We have to get the kids."
"You get Abby," he said pulling me to my feet, "I'll go get Gracie."
We split up, following the cries of the kids, I felt along the wall, reaching Abby's room, and making my way to her.
"Abby, it's okay," I called walking slowly towards her crib.
Until I hit the wall.
"Ow," I rubbed my forehead and followed the wall instead. "Abby you're all right, you're okay I'm coming."
I felt the edge of her crib and reached my arm out, feeling for her onesie. I could feel she had pulled herself up and was standing holding onto the bars. I pulled her gently towards me, reaching also for her blanket and pacifier. They were never too far from her, I lifted her out of the crib, and wrapping her in her blanket, held her close.
"You're okay," I whispered, feeling her little fingers reaching for my hair. I slid the pacifier into her mouth and slowly headed back out into the hallway.
"Nathan?"
"Here, just follow my voice."
"Gracie okay?"
"She's okay, just a little shaken up."
"Good. Keep talking okay?"
"I would, but you're right here."
I stopped and reached a hand out. He grabbed my hand and gently ran his thumb over the back of it.
"You all right?" He asked.
I nodded, before realizing he couldn't see me, "Yeah I'm okay."
He pulled me into a room, and I felt him walk away before coming back. "Here hand me her, I'll put her in the playpen."
