My hand shakes as I reach for the doorknob. Laying my head against the rough wood, I take a deep breath and try to steady my nerves. Just a little while ago I saw Lily. And now I'm going to replace her.
I swing open the door after glancing at the lads. Their smiles are fake and watery, but these little kids probably won't see the difference.
Immediately, a chirpy lady comes up to us. I'm so surprised I backpedal right into Louis. I was expecting Ms. Tootles. I was ready to be rude and mean towards her. But this...this woman isn't her.
"Hi! I'm Eva Tootles. But don't judge me by my mum. She was rude and nasty, I know. I had to live with her for eighteen years. But anyways, you must be One Direction," she says in a happy rush and extends her hand out to me.
I hesitantly shake it. We never made an appointment to come here.
She must see my confusion because she adds brightly, "Oh yeah! Your manager, Simon something-or-other called."
Inside I seethe. I can't believe he called already! I clench my fists and grit my teeth, a breath whistling out between them, trying to calm down. Uncle Si probably meant no harm. I've just been getting angry easier.
Once I'm calm, I realise that the other lads have gone off in search of a little girl, even though there are little boys here also from probably age six to ten. I wince briefly as I see Louis kneeling in front of a little girl about six years old with blonde hair and brown eyes. My eyes scan the room passing over the rest of the lads talking to little blonde girls with different shades of brown eyes.
I don't want another Lily. If we're going to replace her, let's do it absolutely different.
I finally spot a black-haired girl with blue eyes fiddling with a small...twig? I go over and sit beside her on the stairs. She scoots over to make room, but she leaves a small gap between us.
"Hi," I say softly.
"Hi," she sighs with a lift of her shoulders. Her eyebrows lift too, and her voice is filled with sadness.
"What's your name?" I ask.
She frowns and shakes her head. "I hate my name. And you won't want to adopt me. But my name is Kassy."
I shake my head slowly and smile briefly. "I'm Niall. What's with the stick?"
"I'm going to sing when I'm older. I'm going to be on The X-Factor." She says it with such certainty and fierceness in her voice that I can't help but laugh slightly.
She turns and looks up at me with her eyes filled with tears. "What?" She hisses, upset and angry.
"I-I'm sorry!" I say and put my hands up in surrender. "I was on The X-Factor too," I add hesitantly after a pause.
She makes a frustrated noise and stomps up the stairs. I get up to follow her, but a small voice stops me.
"It's okay. Really. She'll get over it."
Well hey :) Just a little teaser. I hope you guys like it. I have an Ask Me book ready, so I'll post that soon. And the book where you guys help me write, I have that made, so I'll post that as well. It's called Our Random Parts.
Vote and comment? Uh, wow. This is the end you guys :')
Thank you all so much who've been on this crazy journey with me. All the tears, the laughs, everything we have gone through together. A lot of you have become really good friends of mine and I hope to meet more of you in the sequel :) Or now ;) Anything I have asked of you, jeez, you've all done it and more.
I first posted this story on March 8, 2014. At the beginning, the first few chapters weren't very good, but you lovely humans stuck with me, and I'm so grateful to you. I can't believe that some other adoption books, ones that have been posted way longer than mine, have less reads and votes than mine. (Okay that sounded rude, but you get what I'm saying... Right?)
I've gotten people messaging me about how funny I am, or how I'm a good writer, or how they love this book and it just makes my day. (Although to be honest, I'm not that funny and not really that good of a writer.)
Lily's life isn't over. I might want to write little chapters of things that happened that I didn't include in the book. Or things that they never got to do with Lily, like how it would turn out.
Please don't steal anything from this book, but if you'd like to write imagines or one shots or I don't even know what to call them, about Lily Aline Tomlinson, go right ahead. Just give me credit and send the link to me. I'd love to read them :) (But seriously, give me credit. No stealing.)
Um, well, I love you all so so much. This has been an incredible experience. And...wow. It's so sad but such an awesome moment at the same time.
I'm sorry the ending didn't go too well, either.
I'm running out of words :) Gosh. It's just so...so surreal. I never expected to finish this book at any time. I'll miss you guys so so much. I'm going to miss the characters in this book a lot, too.
I think that's one of the best things about being a writer: creating characters and making them and describing them the way I want.
Anyways! Hahaha, please go check out the sequel. I'll try to get the word out :) I'd love to see everyone there again :)
Um, I'd love my parting words to be awesome...but I don't think they will be :D
I love you all! Stay beautiful and strong, whatever happens. Remember; all you out reading this message helped this book in some way. Always keep in mind that this book is yours as well as mine :)
