Melinoë's POV
Hot air thrashed against us but the air coolers in the shop washed the heat away. My eyes had scanned the room and Smii7y just stood a little way behind me as he kept a watch over what I was looking at. Shoes took to the metal stands and the walls as shelves and racks were covered in different styles of shoe. Finally, the style of shoe I wanted was seen, a simple pair of converses with a low top. They would be perfect for walking and not burning my skin. I found my way to the ones I wanted and I picked out a simple pair. The laces were white with a white shoe.
After trying them on Smii7y just nodded and I sighed before agreeing to buy them and then slipping my sandals back on. They had been well used and the brown base had been worn down so that they looked awful.
I paid and left the shop but Smii7y was quiet the whole time. The box was in no bag as we headed back to my car and I threw them into the boot. I grabbed my bag and then I gave a look of being ready as we headed to the pub. The town was a quiet one but it was also not. People always seemed to be on their way around us and the streets were well packed but the paths were narrower than most places. Not by much though.
"I went to primary school just down that road and then on the right. My secondary school is the one you can see the field of. We were the best in the area. Both sites were exceptional according to OFSTED," I commented as we passed all of the local shops and the cinema. "And, if you walk up that massive ass hill you would be at my parent's house. I live at the bottom of the hill on the other side. Less compact so I can be as loud as I want." He had clearly missed that when we were at both my house and my parent's house. They were awfully close.
Just as I was about to say something else an obviously shy voice came from behind us. I turned quickly as a faint call of Smii7y's name was made. He turned around with me and three girls all looked adoringly at him. Their eyes not leaving him at all.
"Could we have a photo?" One of them had managed to ask and I stood watching. Also hoping that they didn't give me a second glance. They didn't. Smii7y gave them a pose and I took the phones. I clicked and took a group picture and then a few single pictures. Their faces were a shade of the brightest red but simmering down for the photo.
The three girls practically skipped off as the photos finished and I gave them the phones back. Smii7y pulled me up to his side and we walked to the pub finally. His arm was around me and I didn't mind. He seemed to be a very touchy-feely person and who was I to call that into question?
The place wasn't too full but almost all of the tables had at least one person sitting on it. We ended up sitting at a table next to a large crowd. The two of us had to pass them and as we did so I pulled Smii7y with me as quickly as possible. His legs moved with me but I knew he was too nosy to not ask.
"It is the end of term. They are the teachers from my school. I can't tell you how much I hated my A levels but I did them." He was a quiet one if he saw it was needed but that was not one of the times.
"Mely. You sweet girl." He said it a little too loud but they seemed to be too busy talking about the shit that students had pulled in the year that had passed. My eyes gleamed as he realised that they hadn't heard but he clearly hadn't actually expected them to hear him.
"Stop. Anyway, what do you want to drink? I will grab it." He shrugged and gave a bland mumble so I patted his shoulder whilst I passed and assured him I would buy some type of alcohol. I walked right up to the bar and grabbed two beers. I thanked the man at the bar and returned. Avoiding any sort of contact with the people sat at the table just behind us.
"Cheers. Actually, don't you work as one of the strippers at a club?" I opened my mouth and he knew he was wrong. Both of us did but that didn't matter. I had to defend what I did as a job and myself as a person.
"I sang whilst other people stripped behind me but I was not a stripper. Besides, I am no longer working there. It was a beard of some sorts. So that my family didn't think I was a drug mule or something." He nodded but sipped on his drink, whilst he sipped his beer his face also held a look of faux disbelief. "Bugger off and shave your legs. You're too much of a prick to have legs like a cactus." I felt a smile tug at my lips and I sipped my drink with a 'but that's none of my business' look on my face. He went to speak but bit his tongue and drank some more.
"You sound too posh to be from here. I have not heard a single person talk like you." We had barely been sat for ten minutes and yet he seemed too distracted with facts about my life.
"My biological parents moved a lot. They were dodgy and made lots of enemies. We spent most of our life in and around the edge of London, the actually posh part of England because London is filled with slang talk and common accents. The edges sound like me. Then when we were put into the system we were moved down here. Back down here, I lived in this town for a month or two with my biological parents." Smii7y was all I had sometimes and I think he knew that as Ophion moved on with his family.
"I was thinking about moving again. I am only renting now because I don't love it at all. England I mean. Australia looks pretty nice and so does New Zealand. To be honest New Zealand has fewer spiders so I will probably move there." He agreed and swished the alcohol around in the glass a little.
"Canada?" I shrugged whilst lifting part of my lip to show that I wasn't sure about it at all.
"You live there and you like it and if I move to Canada I will look like some desperate girl who just wants, I don't even know." He didn't seem to agree. He finished up his glass and nodded for me to do the same. I did so in a second as he got ready to leave. When we stood a familiar voice was heard and I mentally swore.
"Hello, Melinoë." I loved the sound of my full name, even if it was a little vain, but from her lips it made my skin crawl.
"Hello, Miss." I gave a smile and wave but a conversation couldn't be avoided. Especially, when Smii7y was there and so eager to ruffle my feathers as much as he could.
"Hello." He had to add it and clearly, she had not been expecting it. Her Welsh accent was still as strong as always and yet I still could barely hear it as I had grown accustomed to the twang. Smii7y commented on her accent as a whisper only seconds after he had finished speaking. Just as I went to leave and wave goodbye, the woman had to start speaking again.
"How is everything? You know, with Ophion and work. I assume you went into science a little further." I shook my head and her eyes never left me, occasionally flicking to Smii7y as he stood close to me, listening.
"No. I just quit one of my jobs. I was a singer but now I am focusing on technology and things like that." She looked surprised. I had not been a very creative or well-spoken student and yet I was speaking openly and loudly.
"What do you do in technology?" She was far too interested in me and I just wanted to leave.
"I am an editor and also a public figure. Not anything you would have heard of on my part, unfortunately. I don't reach audiences as large as some." She nodded and smiled. I finally got to say goodbye and leave. That woman never realised when I was sending the signals of wanting to leave. She just had to say something. A few teachers I did like smiled at me and nodded and I returned it to them as I left. Freedom, finally.
