the sky was bright and clear as i stepped through the school gates. for the first time in a while, i felt real confidence in my choices and smiled. inhaling the cool air, i made my way to the library.
expecting yumi to be seated at our usual place, i walked through the narrow bookcase that was towards the end of the first floor. it was our little hideout as well as being the most comfortable and private space to study. the bookcase covered us from the hawk-eyed librarian and also made it near impossible for other students to work out what was going on.
the happiness i felt was short-lived and my mouth fell open at the sight of taehyung sat by the table instead. he was staring intently at a textbook, a pen being repeatedly flicked across his fingers in frustration. i watched him for a moment then took a step back. trying not to make a sound, i started tiptoeing out of the space between the bookcases, when he called my name.
"oh, isn't that cha jiwoo?"
my nose scrunched up as i stopped and turned back to look at him. taehyung's lips rose onto one side and he wiggled his brows. "why are you running away from me?" he questioned, leaning back against the chair. i rolled my eyes, wanting to get away from him as soon as possible, but he pointed at the chair beside him and then placed the pen down with a sigh when i simply shrugged. "i'm not a bully, you know," he chuckled, pulling the chair out softly.
the innocent look on his face was endearing so i accepted his invitation and took the seat. yumi will be joining us in a few minutes anyway, lucky for taehyung. i took out a textbook on the judicial system of korea and opened to a random page. as much as i tried to focus on the words before me, i could see taehyung observing me from the corner of my eyes. i cleared my throat and shifted to the side slightly, but taehyung followed suit, his chin resting against the palm of his hand.
"don't you have work to do?" i asked, not removing my eyes from the book. taehyung hummed lightly but showed no sign of movement, so i pulled the book up and formed a barrier between us.
"hey," he whined, flicking the book aside with his finger. i slapped his hand away, but that only made him clasp onto the book tightly. "my assignment is to research a sociopath, that's exactly what i'm doing right now... observing a potential sociopath." taehyung's brows raised as he pointed at me with his index finger.
"did you just use me as your test subject?"
i grabbed his outstretched finger, my teeth clenching in annoyance. taehyung's eyes widened as he looked down at our hands and stuttered, "hey, hey not my finger!" he placed a hand against his mouth to muffle his shriek while i applied pressure to his slender index.
when i let go, he was panting as if he had just ran a marathon. "you're actually such a baby," i chuckled, shaking my head in disapproval.
taehyung narrowed his eyes at me, covering his finger. "and i'm going to sue you for harassment."
"try me," i smirked, raising my head from the textbook to meet his gaze. taehyung's eyes were unexpectedly soft and my smile faltered.
"what are you guys doing?"
i quickly broke my gaze away from him at the sound of yumi's voice.
"oh, your friend over here was just professing her undying love for me," taehyung said, placing his hand against his heart and i almost choked on my spit. he let out a small laugh as yumi exchanged confused glances between us.
i shook my head, "he's a liar!" whacking him on his head with the book, we all involuntarily burst into a fit of giggles.
the sound of the librarian's footsteps made us freeze and yumi quickly squeezed into the space next to me. we held our breath watching the woman walk past us without a clue and then immediately fell into a fit of giggles again.
"so i guess that makes us friends now, huh?"
