(A/N Blitz was bought when he was a year and a half. I said he was 6 months when he is actually a year. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience)
We arrived at Florida early the next morning. I have no clue how Jones can drive all night and be ready to start working with Blitz the next morning.
"I have big hopes for this guy." Jones says giving him a big pat on the neck. I smile. Jones was a very good judge of horses, and I could tell just by the way he acted around Blitz, he new he would be a champion.
"On a scale of 1-10 what do you think of him?"
"I give him a 100. I think he'll do more than Duchess, Emily, and even that colt that has hopes for the triple crown after a win at Churchill named Unwanted." I was taken back by this. I had never heard him so sure about something.
"Well then, we better get started."
We take him out to the track. It was funny to watch the way he walked after we put the saddle on him and bit in his mouth.
"It's still foreign to him." Mike jokes. I laugh.
"Ready, Mike?" Jones says tightening Blitz's girth. Mike was honored when we told him he would be Blitz's warm up jockey, but between Jones and I if he did good, we were going to make him Blitz's permanent mount. I give him a leg up and Blitz became unsteady.
"Whatever you do, don't fall off!" I say giving him a pat on the leg.
"I don't think I've ever been on a horse with so much energy." I smile. If it wasn't for Pablo, Mike would have never have been up there. Pablo starting training him ever since he started working for me.
"I want to see how fast this sucker goes. Just know when I let him go. He probably won't stop." Only Jones would do this. Put a new jockey on a horse that has never been ridden before, let the horse go on the track, and hope that the jockey or horse didn't kill himself. We did this with Duchess, but her and I had such a bond that when she saw me, she stopped on a dime.
The track was a mile, unlike when we started Duchess. She started on a quarter mile.Blitz reared a little, and Mike looked to be holding on for dear life.
"Push him, Mike. A horse can never go to fast." Jones let him go. Blitz ran off like lightning, and Jones started his stop watch. We watched Blitz get faster and faster and faster.
"How many more gears are in that horse!" I say.
"As long as he doesn't fall of or Blitz trips, we'll be OK."
I seemed like it only took a split second for Blitz to pass us again. Jones hit the watch button and waited a second and looked down. He smiled.
"55 seconds flat." I jump up and then hug Jones. "We've got us a champion!" He yells.
It took Blitz another whole run for him to finally settle down, and when he finally trotted up to us, you would have never of thought he ran around the track twice. I give him a good pat on the neck.
"Beautiful run boys!" I exclaim.
"Now lets work on the gate." Jones says. We get a track worker to pull the gate with the tractor into position.
"If only we had Duchess. Then we could really test the two." I say.
"We'll work them together sooner than later." Jones says.
"Don't start give me one second." I run to the barn and find a owner of a 3yr old colt. The colt's name was Track Tyrant. He was supposed to race for the Triple Crown and was a favorite but a worry with his leg kept him from pursuing that. It was almost exactly like Duchess's condition. She agreed to bring her colt out. They tacked him up, and we loaded our colts in the starting gate. Blitz went in smoothly.
"I'll be the announcer." Tyrant's groom says. I smile.
"And they are loaded into the starting gate. Celtic Phantom starts to count. And they're off! Celtic Phantom bursts to the front! He is just leaving Track Tyrant in the dust and isn't even giving him a chance!" A smile creeped onto my face. "They enter the back stretch. Celtic Phantom has set a very fast past! Coming into the final turn, and it's Celtic Phantom all the way. 15, 20, Celtic Phantom wins by 30 lengths! Leaving the once champion in the dust!" I smile big. We had a champion.
*Back at the Plantation in NC Pablo's POV*
I walk Duchess the next morning. Her ears were perked and she looked so happy. You would have never have thought she was hurt. When I walked her close to our mini track, she started getting anxious and rambunctious.
"Easy now. You'll be back on the track soon enough."
I finished our walk and put her back in her stall.
Everyday she seemed to get more and more depressed. Depressed because she knew Caitlyn was gone. Depressed because she couldn't leave her stall unless I was walking her. Depressed because she couldn't kick other horses butts and feel the wind in her mane. For 3 weeks I had to deal with this, and it broke my heart.
Finally Caitlyn returned with the crew and Blitz. He was big and bold and handsome. I had never seen a colt his age so big and so built.
"Pablo!" Caitlyn exclaims and gives me a hug,"We have a new champion," She says giving Blitz a big pat on the neck, "He beat Track Tyrant by 30 lengths in a mile match race I guess you can say. Hows Duchess?"
"Depressed. She has missed you miss." I say after closing my mouth because of the news I heard about Blitz. We walk over to Duchess's stall. She opens the door. Duchess throws her head up, pricks her ears forward, nickers, and walks up to Caitlyn.
"Hey, girl. I've missed you so much!" She says giving Duchess a hug. She starts to give Duchess a rub down when the vet walks in.
"How are you guys?" She says.
"Good." Caitlyn and I say almost at the same time.
"Good, now let me take a look at this pretty filly's leg." The vet rubbed up and down her leg and examined it. Then she grabbed a piece of paper. "She can start racing tomorrow if you wanted her to."
Caitlyn looks at me and smiles, then back at the vet, "Good."
When the vet left, we tacked Duchess up and took her out to our track. Jones gave me a leg up, and Mike loaded us into the starting gate. All of a sudden Duchess went crazy and broke through the starting gate.....
