"Your presence is as rare as an eclipse."
I decided enough is enough, so I pulled away a few seconds after she hugged me and fidgeted with my nails.
"Why are you here?"
"Oh, honey, I'm still your mother. I should still see you after what happened."
"So you just stopped by? Isn't it weird you found my new home?" I said, irritated.
"Is your father home?"
". . ."
"Please, Savannah, I need to tell you something important, but he can't be here to listen."
"Then tell me."
She lowered her voice, "I'm sorry for being a terrible mother. I-I... I really am. I know, I know I did those things. I should take the blame, right?"
"Yeah, and...?"
"B-but your father..." she played around with a strand of hair. "He was the reasons why... Why I did those things. If I could only explain everything to you--"
"Don't lie to me, Mary. What happened, happened. Don't blame my dad for the things you put me through. At least own up to it like a proper mother. If you are one," I glared at her and walked back towards my property.
"I will be back. Soon."
I didn't look back. Not a glance at that woman's face. I just shut the door and locked it, and watched as the police drove away after warning her about trespassing and told her to file a report so she could see me because she still had custody over me. Did they not see me glaring at her?
After I watched her leave I grabbed some pretzels and decided I wouldn't tell my dad. At least not yet, until I have proof.

Monday again. I haven't heard from Mary. By now, I had a friend or an acquaintance. We sit together in some classes but don't really know each other that well. Her name is Sarah. I like hanging out with Elijah and Derek in my classes and at lunch.
This morning, Derek and I were going to meet at a coffee shop early so we could order breakfast and then head to school and not be late. I looked through my closet and decided I would wear some black jeans, a white shirt, a denim jacket, and white shoes. Basic, but casual. I walked downstairs and saw my dad who had just woken up. Was I that early?
"Good morning, Sav. Where are you headed to this early?"
"I'm going to go get some breakfast at a coffee shop with a friend. Is that okay?"
"And who is this 'friend'?"
"Why are you so concerned, dad?"
"Why are you not telling me?"
"It's Sarah, a friend of mine from Biology class."
"Okay, okay, go ahead. Have fun, Sav."

I got to the coffee shop we were supposed to meet at and I stood outside. I checked my phone in case she had texted me. When I looked up, she was standing in front of me and smiling.
"Morning, Derek! Nice outfit."
I looked down at my red flannel, white T-shirt, and black jeans. "Thanks, Savannah. You too!"
"What are you ordering?" She asked, leading me inside.
"A bagel."
"Wait-- they have... bagels?" She gasped. Cute, I thought.
"Come on. You didn't know that?"
"No, I want some!"
As we got closer to the front of the line, I pulled out my wallet. She ordered a cheese bagel and I ordered one with butter and coffee. I placed the bill on the counter and the employee at the cash register grabbed it before Savannah could react. She turned around slowly, narrowing her eyes at me. I laughed. She turned around for a few seconds and turned back to me with a sly smile. I ignored her.
When we finished eating, we left the cafe and she shoved a few dollar bills into my hand.
"Thanks for the bagel."
Then she ran off.
"Hey!" I yelled, running after her. I could hear her laughing from the distance, and saw a few people give us some angry looks. I eventually caught up behind her near the school gate and grabbed her wrist, stumbling, trying to make her stop running. She tugged at her wrist, slowing down. I stepped on the back of her shoe and she landed on her knees.
"Sav? I'm so sorry!"
I heard her try to hide her laughter and I shoved the money into her hand.
She got up and threw it at my face before running into her physics class.
"You win this time!" I sighed, tucking the money into my pocket.

I sat down at the back since I couldn't spot Sarah. I sensed someone sit down next to me. I waited a while before turning to look to see who it was.
Noah.
And now I realize... he bleached his hair. He looks much different than how he used to look when we were younger. We made eye contact but I quickly turned to my notebook, pretending to take notes. Why do I have to deal with him right now?
"Savannah. You remember me, right?"
