"She was made of sunlight."
I stood at the porch for what felt like forever. I only realized it when the neighbor's dog began to bark. I straightened my back and lifted my fist, and like it was slow motion, I knocked twice. No response. Was there a doorbell? Wow, I'm an idiot. This time I just pressed the button. What should I be scared of? I can leave anytime. Right?
The door opened.
"Savannah!" My mother beamed as she opened the door for me. She looked much better than the last two times we had met. A little more put together and composed, and with a genuine smile on her face. It took her a moment to realize I had brought a suitcase, my school bag, and a handbag. "What's this?""Uhm..."
"I-Is Jason being abusive?"
"No... more like... dishonest."
"About what I told you?"
"More things. Like work, and his love life. And his relationships with his co-workers."
Mary smiled sadly and shrugged. "I'm not surprised. Anyway, luckily, I have a room you can stay in, then I can start preparing your room with the decor you would like."
"No, it's okay. I'm not sure how long I'm going to stay."
"You're going back to Jason's?"
"I don't know. I want to think about things."
"Well, until you're sure, we'll keep the room this way," she nodded, pulling my suitcase towards the room.
"It's okay, I can carry it," I grabbed the suitcase and pulled it through the hallway, admiring the paintings on the wall. Now that I think about it, this is a big house. It's really fancy, with a grand wide staircase with golden railing. So why did she use her old car? There was an expensive car outside.
"Thanks," I said as I walked into my room. It had light grey walls, a bed with a gold-colored headboard and white bedsheets. There was a white desk at the corner with a light, white curtains, and paintings on the walls, as well as a small sitting area, a walk-in closet, and my bathroom. She nodded and I saw her grab an apron and put it on before heading back to the kitchen downstairs. I began to unpack the clothes I had, putting them in the empty closet. I put my handbag in a drawer and the school bag by my desk. Then I made my way back downstairs.
She was preparing some salmon and chopping something up.
"What are you making?"
"Sushi."
"Looks good."
"Thank you," she placed the now cut sushi rolls on a plate, then put some ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi on the side. We sat down to eat.
"So, Savannah, how's school? Any plans?"
"Friday. Going out with my girlfriends."
"That's nice. Where to?"
"A concert," I said before stuffing myself.
"They can come over whenever they want, okay?"
"Mm. I have a question."
"Shoot."
"Why did you use your old car when you met with me earlier? I mean-- you have another new one outside. It looks better. The old one could break down on you any second."
"So you would recognize me."
"Oh..."
"I'm a pretty weird mom, you know..."
