"Distrust is the defense against betrayal."
Finally, it was Saturday. I could finally relax. Or not. My phone was going off. I turned it on and my phone's light flickered from the number of messages I was receiving. I waited for it to function properly again before opening the texts. They were texts from both Sarah and Rand, asking where I was. Maybe today isn't as good as I thought it would be.
I sighed and responded.
I hope it didn't look forced. I'm a bad liar, but texts are texts, not real life. Right?
I showered and got dressed in a turtleneck sweater and some jeans before I headed downstairs. My mom was already there, making breakfast.
"Morning."
"M-Morning, sweetie."
"What are you making?"
"An... omelette."
"Can I help?"
"Of c-course," her hands were shaking as she cut the onions.
That's when I heard a car pulling out of the front yard. I looked at the window and saw a familiar car drive away.
"Um, is that..."
"No one is here."
"My dad."
"What are y-you talking about?"
"Why is he here?"
"He-- no. I mean he's not here."
"Why?"
"Why?"
"Mom," I stood in front of her and she looked down.
"Sav. He came looking for you, I said you weren't here."
I kept pushing with questions, and the omelettes started to burn. I quickly cooled them down with water, but they were already a waste.
"Let's just eat out," Mary sighed, cleaning up the mess. I quickly helped her finish up and we got into her sports car. I sat down in the passenger seat.
"Are you sure you don't want to sit in the back?"
"Uh, no. Why?"
"Oh, nothing, maybe it just has more spacious seating.."
"I'm good."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes?" I raised a brow. She shook her head and sat in the driver's seat, annoyed. I decided not to comment on it. "Where are we going?"
"Break The Fast. It's close to Red Park."
Red Park. That's where I saw that 'co-worker' hold hands with my father. Near his house.
"Alright."
We sat in silence, so I decided to go on my phone. I switched it off as I saw we were nearing the park. We passed it on our left and Mary made a U-turn to the right into the neighbourhood's residential area.
"Why here?" I asked. "These are the housing areas."
"Oh, it's quite small, you see," she pulled out a flask and gulped down something.
"Are you drinking?"
The doors locked. The car sped up.
"Why are you speeding up?"
She increased the speed. She drank more.
"Mom."
She kept her eyes on the road. She became nearer and nearer to my dad's house.
"All right, genius. Your dad is bad, I'm sorry, come over. Oh, you're here? Let me take you back to that liar. Makes sense," I started spewing out nonsense in utter rage. The car slowed. I unlocked the door and opened it. She noticed and sped up, passing the house. She made a sharp U-turn and went back in the direction of the house.
"CLOSE THE DOOR!"
"STOP THE CAR!"
"YOU'RE GOING, WHETHER YOU'D LIKE IT OR NOT!"
My eyes stung with tears, my legs were unable to move. I felt an arm reach over me to reach the door. I grabbed her wrist, twisting it. She struggled against me, driving with one hand. I let go as she sped up accidentally, and she put both hands back on the wheel to control the car. We were almost to the house. I hopped out, landing on my knees. The car slowed down. I got up and ran in the opposite direction. Mary made a sharp U-turn. I ran into Red Park and out the other gate, the car went the other way, around the gates of the park, looking for the gate where I exited. I raced out and around the gates on the opposite side of the park, adrenaline coursing through me, channelled as fear. I made my way to a close house and ran onto the porch and hopped over the short fence into the backyard. I ducked under the bushes and pulled out my phone and called Derek.
He picked up.
"H-hello?"
"Sav?"
"Hey, Derek... you free?"
