I opened my eyes and sighed to find that my nightmare was real. I got out of bed and stumbled into the lounge.

“Morning Harry. How are you?”

I looked up at Kelly. “Dying. Same as yesterday, and the day before. How’s Nick?”

“He’s gone crazy. He won’t talk to anyone but me.”

“At least he still has you,” I sighed as I walked past her and down the passage. I opened the door to the sick room and found Sierra where I left her. No surprise there.

“Hey baby,” I whispered before kissing her softly. “Yesterday wasn’t too good. I got detention again, and your dad said he might have to kick me out. I know he won’t though.” I sat down on the chair next to her bed. They gave her a week. It’s already been three and her heart’s still beating. This puts me on edge instead of giving me hope. She could die at any moment now.

“I’ve been watching a scary amount of chick flicks,” I chuckled, glancing over at her straight expression. I pretended she was smiling back at me and continued, “Especially ‘Safe Haven’. It’s about a woman who’s running away from her past and a man that tries to help. It’s like us inverted I guess. I must have watched it three times in a row. His wife died before they meet and at the end, there was a letter addressed to the new girl. It makes me wonder if- never mind.”

“I’m basically talking to myself,” I sighed. I looked over at her, “Can you hear me, Sierra? Of course she can’t, Harry.”

“Actually there’s a chance she can.” I looked up to see Miss Stella walk in.

“I thought you said she’s dying?”

“Well, there’s a chance that-“ her smile faded, “I’m sorry. I don’t want to give you false hope.”

“Yeah,” I nodded, “So, when’s she going to die then? Or is she just staying like this forever, not completely dead but far from alive.”

“I have no idea, honestly. I don’t know why she’s still alive. She should be long dead,” she put bluntly. I looked down at her, my little fighter.

“She’s not going to die,” I stated.

“Harry, she-“

“She won’t; She can’t.”

“She might.”

“That’s what you said a week ago, and a week before that.”

Voices began moving forward us, “How could I possibly plan any of this?”

“She got caught up in all your work, Lance!” Her mother came rushing in and immediately burst into tears when she saw Sierra lying in her death bed. It only dampened my hope to its last thread when hearing her thoughts, and Dr Evans’, and Miss Stella’s. No one but me had hope. Does that make my hope hopeless?

“Harry, oh my boy!” she exclaimed as her arms wrapped around me. I felt her tears wet my shirt.

“I’m sorry, Theresa. It’s my fault, not Dr Evans'. She tried to come to save me and this is what I let happen.”

“It’s not your fault, angel,” she smiled faintly, kissing my forehead before drawing back and standing over Sierra’s bed.

“My baby,” she whispered, brushing a hand over Sierra’s hair. “How did it happen?”

“A half human, half wolf creature attacked her and when I found it…” I clenched my jaw thinking back to it, “I killed it immediately.”

“How did you get her out?” Dr Evans asked.
