Chapter Five

Hey guys, I'm back. I tried to make sure I didn't delay this one as much as I delayed Chapter 4. I also know that I haven't really been including Susie, but she's gonna get important. Enjoy!

Kris woke up to the soft sound of breathing. He looked down to see that the pressure on his chest was Noelle laying on him. Her fur was so soft, so warm, so comforting. He was glad that a third friend hadn't popped up.
His eyes shot up when he heard the front door open. Then he remembered that Noelle's mom was supposed to be back this morning. He tried to sit up, but Noelle was still fast asleep.
"Noelle?" He heard her mother call from the front door. Noelle's ears perked up, making Kris smile. He nudged her a little, and she shot up at the sight of her mother. Her face red, she scrambled off of Kris, relieving the pressure keeping him down. He sat up as well, wondering how Noelle's mom would react to the questionable scene she had walked in on.
"What are you doing?" Noelle's mother gestured towards Kris, "I thought I asked you to wait till you were 18!" It didn't take Kris a while to understand what she meant.
"God, Mom!" Noelle squealed, blushing, "Nothing happened!" Kris decided that he would make it worse. Just for laughs.
Kris stood up, knowing all too well that he was shirtless. "I apologise, Mrs. Holiday," he started, "I didn't realize that you guys had a due date set up." Noelle blushed in embarrassment, while her mom still had her stone cold expression.
"Why, yes we did," she replied, not knowing what to make of this apology. Kris wasn't even getting started.
"Is there a due date for her second time? Cause I wouldn't mind-" he started before Noelle put a hand over his mouth.
"He's just joking, Mom!" She led Kris into the guest room to get his clothes.
"What are you doing?!" She asked once the door was closed. She was blushing furiously, all part of Kris's plan.
"I'm just breaking the ice," he said, picking his shirt off the floor.
"You do know that my mother is extremely literal, right?" She asked. He just chuckled and took Noelle's hand.
"Hey, I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" Kris left the house, waving towards Noelle's mom, who, as he suspected, did not wave back.

                ***************

The next day at school, Kris soon found that news travelled fast in the small community of Hometown. He heard the other kids gossiping in the hall about what him and Noelle were doing at that restaurant. The first one to actually talk to him was Susie.
"Hey!" She called as Kris walked down the hall. He was relieved to hear from his friend. He made his way towards the wall Susie was leaning on.
"What are all these kids talking about?" Kris said, curious about how much of the truth they knew.
Susie laughed. "Mostly just that you and Noelle might be dating." She looked down at Kris with a smirk, "My theory is that you're just weird." That earned a smile out of Kris.
"Neither of those are wrong, actually." He said softly, not wanting to fuel the evil parasites known as teenagers with fresh gossip.
Susie's head whipped around immediately. "You mean you guys are actually a thing?"
"Yeah, but I don't know if Noelle wants to make it public, so I would keep my voice down." He said. Susie slugged him in the arm, a bit harder than he would have liked.
"You better keep it in your pants until you're both out of high school," she added. She and Kris laughed until the bell ordered them and the rest if the students to class.
Ms. Alphys's class went by like any other day, except Kris could feel the looks of his classmates. What was so interesting about his life? Why couldn't they get their own?
He looked over to Noelle. It seemed that she was also hearing the gossip. She had been nibbling at her pencil, one of her nervous habits.
Kris thought for a second. Noelle was a lot more popular than him, so it would affect her more than it would affect him.
Once lunch rolled around, Kris ran up to Noelle to talk about the obvious.
"You've heard?" She asked. Kris nodded. It was everywhere around school.
Noelle shrugged her shoulders. She grabbed his hand as they made their way into the lunchroom.
"You know what?" She whispered to Kris as he sat down with his lunch. "Why not? If anyone asks, yes, we're dating." She then added, "If you're okay with that."
Kris scoffed, "Of course it's okay with me. This is the most popular I'll ever get!" They sat and laughed together, enjoying their lunch.
The rest of the day went by pretty normally, besides the occasional question of if they were together. Their reactions to the answers were priceless.
Kris walked home with Susie, who had been unusually talkative about him and Noelle.
"How'd it start, man?" She asked, throwing her arm around him shoulders. And he thought that Noelle was tall.
"We've been friends for a while," he answered, recalling how he would do everything to prank her. He was an evil child. "Ever since we were little kids, my dad would take the family over, or vice versa." He felt nostalgic for the good old days, when Asriel was here and his family wasn't so weird.
"That's pretty cool." Susie responded, "I guess all that stopped after the divorce." Kris tensed up, but not enough to be noticed. He was sensitive about the subject, but Susie was a friend.
"Y'know, that's when you got all quiet," Susie continued, her voice getting softer, "I would always pick on you for it." Kris remembered the time Susie introduced him to what was then known as a Noogie. He did not appreciate the experience.
"It's all good," Kris replied, "We're friends now, and friends don't hold grudges." Susie waved goodbye to him and gave him a toothy smile as she detoured off to the east side of town. Kris kept on going towards his home, all the way at the northern part of town.
The trees to the east were glowing with an auburn that announced the colder months to come. The sun shone with a golden light that filled Kris with a good feeling in his chest. Things were great. He stood in front of his house, a grand two-story home, enough for a family of four. The thought dragged him back to reality. There was still only him and his mother.
He walked into the house, a sweet, familiar smell smacking him in his edgy little face. It was much stronger than usual, and mixed with scents of a feast. His mom was happy, but why?
He looked over into the kitchen, his mom humming a song while washing dishes. She had prepared a huge dinner for something. Kris could already guess what was going on.
"Hey, Mom," he said, knowing full well that she would stop him and let him know. Mom's are extremely predictable.
"Kris!" She exclaimed, "Guess what?" She sat down in Chariel, the very originally named chair for Toriel.
"Asriel?" He asked. As soon as he said it, she shot up from her chair and grabbed him into a big, fluffy hug.
"Yes! He's going to be here tonight!" Kris couldn't say that he wasn't excited either. He hadn't seen Asriel for years!
"Can Dad come?" Kris asked skeptically, remembering their last talk about Asgore. Toriel nodded her head not exactly enthusiastic, but it was enough for Kris. The whole family was getting back together for Asriel to get home!
Kris went into his room, making sure everything was in order. He put the, ah, "books" that he had "borrowed" back under Azzy's mattress. He wanted everything just like it was before. Well, the good parts.
After he had gotten everything in order, he decided to tell Noelle the good news. He pulled out his phone and noticed that the usually green bar seemed to be completely empty. Great.
He plugged his phone into the wall, hoping that he would be able to get ahold of her later. Kris half-ran, half-fell down the stairs to observe the buffet in more detail. There was, of course, her butterscotch cinnamon pie, the golden brown crust wafting with sweetness. There was roast beef (try not to think about the specifics). There was dozens of vegetable dishes, some casserole from the neighbors, and even a couple of gallons of fruit punch. You would think that a holiday or something was coming up, but that's just the way Toriel was, always outdoing herself. Part of Kris thought that she was just trying to impress Asgore out of spite.
His stomach decided to imitate the call of a humpback whale in late summer at the idea of food. He grabbed his coat and made his way to the diner down the street. It hadn't gotten much darker, but the stars that had appeared were beautiful, the dark auburn of the sky slowly turning violet as the stars were framed to shine almost melodically. The air was refreshingly cool, almost chilly, as Kris walked.
One of the good things about a small town is that you can walk pretty much anywhere with little trouble. He got to the diner pretty quickly, and he was greeted by the nice aroma of hot chocolate. The place was empty except for the owner, , who gave him a smile as she made him a cup.
"Did you hear the good news?" She asked, dropping off a glass of hot cocoa at the bar, sliding it to Kris.
"Of course," he answered, taking a generous sip, "if you're referring to Asriel." He saw her ears perked up, letting him know he had spilled the beans.
"Don't tell anyone," he quickly added, "We want his return to be, um, not big. He doesn't want to have a parade waiting for him, y'know?"
The bunny let out a chuckle and walked into the back. Kris was left to think to himself. Today was Monday. He didn't know when Asriel was going to leave, but he hoped that it would be after the dance. He really wanted Asriel to give him some pointers.
His gaze travelled to the wall, which had pictures of special occasions, such as the grand opening, the grand reopening (due to a terrible storm that wrecked the place before even Asriel was born), the grand rereopening (due to the death of the first owner and economic struggles), and Asriel's departure to college, showing him with his friends, Bunny Lady, and Kris on his shoulders. His heart ached at the thought that Asriel would have to leave again, leaving another picture on the wall, and maybe not even coming back.
Kris's head turned at the sound of a bell, it's call telling everyone in the diner that someone had arrived. By everyone in the diner, that would only refer to Kris, who took another swig of his drink. The monster who had walked in was tall, definitely in good shape, with a black tee, well fitting jeans, and small white horns on his head. It was Asriel!
Kris hopped down and practically tackles his brother, gripping him as tight at he could.  He smelled of sweat and oil. He must have had to pull over in the way. Asriel lifted Kris up with little effort, showing Kris how to his brother was.
"Howdy, Kris!" Asriel said as he let his brother down. Kris got a slight chill from how different he seemed, but still had the small town part of him.
"You should have come sooner!" Kris answered, giving him a punch in the arm. Kris's head was barely at Azzy's shoulder now. "What was the college like?" Kris urged on, waiting to make a 90's movie reference.
"Big. The entire campus was about twice the size of the town. There were so many buildings for all the classes and frat houses and extracurricular activities!" Asriel explained, a gloss washing over his teal-green eyes. He apparently liked the school. "I joined this one frat house, and it was wild. Have you ever seen someone chug an entire keg in one go?!"
Kris wanted to answer with a reference, but he would not rely on the early 2000's. Azzy deserved better than that.
Kris took a look at the clock on the wall. It was nearing 7:00, when Asgore was supposed to show up at the house. He told Asriel this, and, in a mutual understanding, knew that those two shouldn't be kept in the same house alone for an extended period of time.
They went outside, Kris seeing a beautiful red car. Asriel hopped into the drivers seat and retracted the roof. They road to their house, the icy autumn wind ruffling their hair. It was a good thing that Kris had brought his coat. The light ginger of the leaves and the dropping temperature gave away that winter was soon approaching.
Asriel pulled up into the driveway, seeing a small red minivan and a red pickup truck full of gardening tools. As Asriel entered the house, Toriel immediately hugged him. Asgore followed suit, and soon the four of them were sitting in the dining room, enjoying a beautifully dinner.
The rest of the night was nothing more than a blur of happiness. Everyone was happy about Azzy being back. It seemed as though it were back before the divorce, when they would all be together. They talked about Asriel's college, where he had chosen to major in mechanics and engineering. He told of some of his mishaps that involved beer kegs and the police that shouldn't be elaborated on right now.

Soon, 10:30 rolled along and Asgore had to leave. Toriel insisted that the boys went to sleep, since it was getting late. Asriel nearly passed out on his bed, stomach full and mind weary from jet lag. Kris checked his phone, which he had kept charging.

                   18 Missed Calls

18?! Who would want to talk to him so desperately? He checked who had called so spastically. Noelle. He immediately called her, wondering what could be so important.
It rang for a bit, until a sobbing voice greeted him. He could barely make out what she was saying.
"Calm down, I can't hear you," he said, trying to calm the seemingly distressed deer girl. He heard her sniffle, before she told him.
"It's my dad," Noelle started, still crying, "He's dead!"
She hung up, leaving Kris to process what he had just heard.
