Chapter Twelve
I attempted to steer the boat towards Megan, but I wasn't strong enough to control both paddles. Not to mention Cooper blabbering on about how he always dances to 'Boogie Beebies' with his nan on a Friday night. (Last Friday it was straight after gym class, so he didn't even have to get changed!!) Before any of us could get to Megan- who by now was struggling to even breathe; Zayn had suddenly, according to Cooper "manouvered his booty into the water like an elegant gazelle running from it's wild and dangerous predator". We waited a few minutes before Zayn burst out of the water like an elegant gazelle emerging from the bushes, and in his arms lay Megan's lifeless body. Sasha, Aimee and I gasped simultaneously at the sight of the poor condition Megan was in. Actually, I think I was more surprised that it was Zayn saving her. Everyone's attention was now focused on Megan. We all called for Sally but she was no where to be seen. Zayn turned the other way and started to head back to shore. We all dived into the canal to Megan's aid. Just as we all dived in, Cooper's glasses plunged into the water never to be seen again. He started splashing frantically until he reaches the whistle from around his neck and blows into it; not realising that it was full of dirty canal water. He then had a coughing fit which lasted for up to five minutes. To everybody's disbelief, two ducks swam willingly up to Cooper. He then clung on for dear life to their necks as they guided him back to the rest of us. Unbeknown to Cooper, since he lost his glasses; by the time he had got back to us the two poor ducks had been strangled to death. Cooper climbed stageringly out of the water and patted the ducks on the head and thanked them. I felt sorry for laughing.
"I KNEW GRANDMA'S WHISTLE WOULD WORK!!" Cooper exclaimed proudly. Then we all turned our attention to Megan, again. Megan's cold, lifeless body lay limp on the damp ground, our heads looking down worryingly. Sally's voice emerged from behind us so we all made a gap in the middle for her.
"What's happened??" Sally yelled.
"Zayn pushed her!" A voice said coming from the back. Zayn's eyes trailed to the back to see them all with straight faces.
"Now, now I am sure it was only an accident, right Zayn?" Sally said nodding to Zayn. Zayn nodded back. Me and the girls snarled at him. Sally bent down to check if Megan was breathing, and to everyone's relief she was! Sally stood up.
"She's going to be ok" Sally reassured us all.
"Actually, this would be a great practical exercise for CPR. Would anyone like to volunteer?" Sally asked folding her arms.
"ME!! PICK ME!!" Cooper sajd eagerly.
