Lisa's POV

The sun was setting when I came home. I opened the front door and I could already smell dinner cooking.

"Sweetie, is that you?" My mom yelled from the kitchen.

"Yes mom," I responded.

"Great. Dinner's almost ready," she said.

I immediately ran upstairs. I didn't really want to talk about what happened. I locked the door to my room and sat on my bed. Rose's letter was still clutched in my hand.

Should I read it now? Am I ready?

I opened the envelope and slowly pulled out a piece of folded paper. It was handwritten by Rosie and adorably decorated with sunflowers.

I started to read.

To my favorite person, my best friend, my soul sister, happy birthday to you! By the time that you read this, I'm probably long gone. It's so crazy where life has taken us, but I cannot miss the opportunity to leave a message for your 18th birthday so here it goes... There are so many things I can talk about like how incredible of a person you are and how much you inspire me, but mostly, I want to talk about this. Ever since I got sick, nothing has been easy. Every single thing in my life started to fall apart, but I was able to endure everything with you by my side. Lisa, I cannot thank you enough for holding me when I cry, for the endless laughter, and for always making sure that I am the best version of myself. Thank you for teaching me how to love and how to be brave. But mostly, thank you for always saving me. Having a friend like you made me realize how lucky I am. I may not be able to live a long life, but spending my life with you beside me is more than enough. I will always cherish the memories we had. I hope you know that I appreciate every part of you. The beautiful you, the imperfect you, the inspiring you, the clumsy you. As long as it's YOU, I will always be there for you until the end. I love you so much. You are indeed one of the most special people in my life. If I could have one last wish, I would wish to meet you again in another life. Until then, keep shining your light onto the world like the bright star that you are. Happiest birthday, my soulmate.

Love,

Chipmunk Rosie
