"You're going to kill it," Izzy assured. Alec was so nervous he could barley talk so he nodded in response, a small, half-hearted smile on his face. Izzy gave Alec and Magnus a quick hug and smiled at them, "good luck." She said.
Alec and Magnus turned and pushed open the elaborate double doors. This was so important, not just to them but for the union of all Shadowhunters and Downworlders. Alec had finally managed to have an official meeting with the clave about legalisation of Shadowhunters marrying Downworlders. The past few weeks had been incredibly stressful for both Magnus and Alec, the two of whom had been forced to admit that they wanted to marry each other without any real proposal because of the ridiculous laws set in place. Laws that not enough people had attempted to change for a considerable amount of time, but Magnus and Alec would.
"Mr Lightwood and Mr Bane," Jia Penhallow greeted. She was sat on a raised platform in a large, leather chair. To both sides of her, on slightly less extravagant chairs, sat other clave
members, all staring down at the two men. "We already know why you're hear so I'd like to make this short and sweet," she announced.
Alec looked at Magnus and back to Jia, "counsellor Penhallow, the laws set on marriage between Downworlders and Shadowhunters are laws based on ignorance. As time progresses, laws should too, and quite frankly it's ridiculous that it's entirely possible for Shadowhunters and Downworlders to have a wedding ceremony in the mundane world as to them we're just two people, however to the shadow-world it's something that shouldn't be tolerated." Magnus smiled at Alec, he made a good point.
"Mr Bane," Jia said, "do you have anything to say on the matter?"
"I've been alive for a long time, before Shadowhunters and Downworlders even dating was allowed. The law passed saying that they could be romantically involved so it seems ridiculous that they're not given the same privileges as every other couple."
"The law is hard, but it was put there for a reason," Jia explained.
"May I ask the reason?" Alec chimed in.
"Pardon?" Jia said, clearly taken a back.
"May I ask the reason?" Alec repeated, in a slower, more patronising tone.
"Well, if Downworlders and Shadowhunters has children, their child would be brought up in a house of conflict, what if war occurred? Then what?" Jia began.
"Actually," Magnus stated, "there's no law saying Downworlsers and Shadowhunters can't have children," he trailed off upon seeing the look on councillor Penhallow's face.
Jia stared at them, blankly. "Actually, you're right Magnus," Alec began, "if downworlders and Shadowhunters can have parental responsibility then they should be allowed to wed,"
Jia blinked at them, unsure of what to say. She finally settled on "downworlders and Shadowhunters, that's centuries of hatred, loathing and war, why do you think this can change?"
"Because," Magnus stated, "if we're willing to look past it to the point where actually many downworlders and Shadowhunters wish to be married, the world is clearly evolving and the law should too." He actually heard murmurs Of agreement from the clave members. Alec smiled at Magnus and intertwined his fingers with the warlock's. Jia Penhallow turned and faced the clave, "no's to the right?" She asked, several hands were raised, but almost certainly not a majority. Magnus gripped Alec's hand tighter. "Yes's to the left?" She asked. This time more hands were shown than the previous question. She turned and faced the two men who looked up at her, hopefully. "The clave have voted but remember it's me that makes an ultimate decision here." Alec did everything he could to not mention Aline and her love interests with female downworlders. "Motion approved," she stated, "as of this day, the law shall be passed that Shadowhunters and downworlders may wed, providing the clave are informed and the wedding is treated with the same amount of official record as a Shadowhunter wedding. You may leave." Magnus squeezed Alec's hand and tried to keep cool as the two men left the room, beaming. As soon as the doors closed behind them, Alec wrapped his arms tightly around Magnus's waist, spinning on the spot and spinning the warlock around, his boyfriends feet slightly off the floor. Izzy had waited for them outside and bounced slightly, clasping her hands together and pulling both men into a tight hug once they'd broken apart from each other. "So," she said, "you two can-" she trailed off. Alec stood next to Magnus and kept an arm around his waist, kissing his cheek which Magnus smiled at. "Traditionally," Magnus said, "And don't get me wrong I'm all for breaking tradition, but usually the one of the two people getting married has to propose first," he said, glaring at Alec.
"Uh, okay, I want an engagement ring so I think you should propose to me," Alec retorted. The soon to be husbands laughed, as did Izzy. This was quite possibly the worst proposal ever.
