Smiling Excitedly

Keeping on my insane grin, I sat behind the counter in silence since Denise went to the market to buy some food, leaving me all alone.

I stood up from my position and went to the back to work with my latest guest he was a good young fellow, friend to all and acquaintance to enemies, t'was certainly shame he died of an illness.

My long fingernails traced the mans cheekbones, "I'm going to make you look as handsome as you were when you were alive young man." I say to my guest, anyone who would see me do this would think that I am rather gone in the head, but I know somewhere deep in there my guests can hear me clearly,

I laugh, then I went to go get my equipment, as I try to find my scalpel, a certain something caught my eye that made my blood go a bit cold,

It was pink bookmark, a small hole was cut at the edge and a pink satin ribbon to match was tied within the opening; I remember this one

This was a bookmark (Y/n) created herself.

Hesitant, I grab the bookmark with my long nails, and to my surprise it was still in very good condition.

I fiddle with it in my fingers, intensely examining the object in my hands,

It didn't seem long ago that she gave this to me, hehehe!

'It didn't seem long ago that you left her to go find someone else,' My concious snapped at me, I frown at my thoughts. I didn't leave because I had to find her.

'But she was one of those reasons wasn't it?' It continued further, I felt my frown deepen and slowly it turned into a scowl.

'(Y/n) must've cried,' Shut up. 'She must've cried lots.' Shut the bloody hell up,

'Who was more important hm? (Y/n) or that woman who never loved you back? Or maybe it was because you were too engrossed in your selfish research?!'

I SAID SHUT THE FUCK UP-

The battle within me came to an abrupt halt as I heard the door click open,

"Undertaker I'm back." Denise states as she enters the parlor, "Ah! Welcome back dear," I greet her with one of my signature smiles, slowly regaining my calm laid-back composure.

"I'll put these at the back and I'll go and help you," She continues as she walked towards the back, I reply with a nod with my smile still plastered on my face I always appreciated the amount of help I receive from Denise, I treat her like family and she does the same as well to me.

Denise then comes back and immediately spots the pink bookmark I was holding, "Is that a bookmark? A pink bookmark to be exact?" She questions me, pointing at said bookmark.

"Why yes, it is, this actually was made by (Y/n)-" "She made this?" She asks further, her eyes lightening up at the sound of my friends' name,

It seems I have made quite the mistake of mentioning her name to Denise but nonetheless I answered truthfully,

"As I previously stated, she made this herself as a gift for me," I finished, smiling widely at the memory.

"As a gift? But why?" She asks, I swear she asks too many questions at times, but one can never be too curious I suppose.

"It was a token or what she called it, 'sign of our friendship'." I explained laughing to myself, "Ironically, the day that she gave this me was the same day I retired."

"Why did you retire anyway?" She asks again as she began to sit on top of one the coffins, her chin leaning on her palm.

"I wanted to find someone you see, and I can't find her if I'm too busy reaping souls and the lot." I lied, yes finding her was one of the reasons, but there was another explanation as to why I left the dispatch.

"Who did you want to find anyways?" She questions as she leans forward in anticipation, I laugh at her eagerness, "I'm afraid I can't tell you everything my dear!" I tell her, raising up my index finger.

She leaned back looking quite disappointed, but I know that she understands. She's been working here long enough to know that.

"I understand..." She trails off, see? I told you she understands! Hehehe!

"But," She began, thinking of another question to ask, her purple eyes flickered as she figured it out, "How did (Y/n) react to you retiring?"

My smile faltered a little, "She took it quite well, I suppose you could say she didn't exactly react in anyway,"

And that was a blatant lie.

I walk through the dispatch's hallways with a small smile, this is it. I'm finally going to desert myself today.

I can finally focus entirely on my research on my bizarre dolls as well as trying to find her without being rudely disturbed by a soul list.

'But the downside is that you'll be leaving her behind.' My thoughts remarked, I brush it off and kept on walking to the Management Division.

"Hey!" I hear her voice along with footsteps coming from behind me, I stiffen a little at the sound of her voice. I can't tell her! So I keep walking.

"Hey? Adrian! Hey!" She calls out again as I hear her footsteps get closer and louder, I sigh in defeat and stop in my tracks.

I then turn to face her and almost immediately I felt my dead heart soar,

She was running towards me, her scythe in hand and a sweet, genuine smile on her face. Then all of sudden an unorthodox, pleasurable feeling hit me and damn it hit me hard.

I love her. I love her so much,

I love her smile, I love her personality, I love the smallest things about her, I love her everything.

Then another realization hits me even harder,

You really can't tell her that you're leaving her now.

"Adrian! Thank the Gods! I was actually starting to think you were ignoring me," She stated with a pout, at that I felt my palms sweating a little, "Of course not (Y/N), I was just merely lost in my own thoughts," I replied coolly,

"Anyways, I wanted to give something I made for you," She paused, sheepishly shoving her hand down her coat pocket, I blinked and waited in anticipation,

She then pulled out a pink bookmark from her coat pocket, and outstretched her hand towards me, "Here, I knew pink was your favorite color and that you love to read books, so I decided to make this for you!" She proclaims with a proud smile, before shyly looking away and saying, "I hope you'll like it, or better than that, use it."

I get the bookmark in her hand and examine it, no one has ever given me something like this before, the gift was so simple yet was so thoughtful...

(Y/N) really was something,

A blush crept up my cheeks at an alarming rate, "Thank you (Y/N)," I say with a small smile, "Thank you so much, but why the gift?" I ask, and then I deadpan at my bluntness, why would I ask why someone gave me something so thoughtful? The question is most inconsiderate,

"Oh!," She begins as her smile started faltering just a tiny bit, which made me a bit suspicious, "No reason in particular, just think of it as a sign of our friendship!" She explained with a bright smile,

"Again, Thank you so much," I reply, holding the bookmark close against my chest, "I'll surely cherish it (Y/n)," I state, she gave me a closed-eye smile, her hair bouncing cutely as she smiled at me,

"I know you will!"
