"Jason, do you like me?" I asked with a huge smile. We were sitting in a park near our street. Jason and I went here all the time - to play, eat, talk, or even just to relax and get lost into the sight of the long willow trees. I'm eight years old and Jason is my best friend. We've been friends for about 5 years, and met at kindergarten.
"Yeah, you're my best friend remember!" He replied, his blue eyes as bright as the sea flickered from one place to another.
"Yeah but do you want to pretend to get married? It will be fun!" I asked him, looking down at my hands.
"Okay, we can see how this goes."
There was a long pause while I looked around the park to find a perfect place. I smiled.
"Let's go under that tree." I got up ran over to a huge willow tree with strings of leaves that hung almost down to the floor. Jason followed. We both moved the leaves out of the way with our arms and stepped inside so no-one could see us behind the green leaves. That's what's so magical about willow trees, the fact that they are mysterious but beautiful in different ways.
"Do you know how to do it?" Jason asked, confused.
"Um...I think you need to give me a ring." I replied, a bit unsure.
"I don't have one though." He said, then I shrugged. He started to look around the area under the tree and picked a strand of grass from the ground and tied it into a knot, with enough room for my finger to fit in. "Is this okay?" He questioned.
It was a funny looking ring. The grass was perfectly green and fresh but it definately wasn't the rock I was hoping for.
"I guess, it's only a pretend wedding anyway." I told him as he put the grass ring around my finger. We laughed a bit and said our made up vowels, which we actually took very seriously.
"I, Kendall Harper, promise to love you forever and ever and ever and...ever!" I laughed.
"I, Jason Rick, promise to...um..." he struggled. "to only ever love you and nobody else, ever!"
I thought that was the best vow in the world, and was jealous of his imagination. I always got jealous of him for silly reasons. Like that time he got a new bike one day before I got my new bike.
"Can I also have that as my vow? Pleaaaseee?" I begged. He nodded with a smile. We promised eachother that whatever happened we would be the only love of our lives, as a fake vow ofcourse. We thought for a while when we finished our vowels, and decided what it was time for, the kiss.
"Oops, i forgot about this part...we don't have to kiss do we?" I giggled, whilst twirling a lime green strand of leaves between my fingers.
"I don't know...that's what they usually do right?" Jason raised an eyebrow. I nodded. I took a huge deep breath. We both pursed our lips and squinted our eyes so we couldn't see what was happening. We leaned in, and as soon as our lips touched, we jumped back straight away.
"EWW!" We both screamed, then we decided that we will never kiss anyone again after that.
I had to move cities 2 months later. I never saw Jason again.
8 years later.
"Have you packed all of your stuff Kendall?" Mum peeked her head into my room.
My room was filled with cardboard boxes and duct tape lying around the floor. It was quite a day of relief - moving back to my old town. I've always hated living here, my social life was terrible and I hated my school.
"I think so, I'll go and load them into the car."
I picked up a few boxes and walked out to the car. My name is Kendall Harper and I'm 16 years old. My family and I are moving back to our hometown, as my dad had been offered a better job back there. We all agreed to move back as we miss our other relatives down there and it was a good chance to catch up.
