I could now declare that, that was one of the worst days of my life. When school ended, I decided to walk home instead of mum picking me up. Luckily for me, it was only a ten minute walk. I didn't want mum to pick me up because I knew that as soon as I would have stepped in that car, she would want to know all about my day, and I really wasn't in the mood for talking.
I reached home feeling tired and depressed at the same time. I pulled out my house key from my dress pocket and pushed it into the keyhole of my front door. I knew mum was home and she could have easily opened the door for me, but my plan was to sneak upstairs and lock myself in my bedroom for a few hours. I turned the key then pushed the door open. To my disappointment, mum heard me unlocking the door and was already standing right in front of me.
"Hey honey, why didn't you just knock and let me open the door?"
"I wasn't sure if you'd gone out." I lied.
"My car is out the front though..."
I felt dumb and decided to ignore her sentence.
"How was your first day anyway? Tell me all about it!" she exclaimed with a small smile. I knew this was coming, why wouldn't it?
"Honestly, I don't feel like talking about it." I brushed past her and made my way for the stairs, but she stopped me.
"I know what that means," she sighed then rubbed her eyes. "Come on, come and sit in the lounge room. I need you to tell me what happened. Besides, we'll be sitting on the new couch that came today."
From that moment I knew I had no choice but to follow her. I sat down on our brand new chocolate leather couch that was still really stiff because it was new of course.
"I know you don't feel like talking, so I'll just ask some questions and you can respond, alright? Then you can go and relax in your room." She started. I liked the sound of her second sentence the most. I nodded.
"Firstly, how are the teachers?"
"Good, I guess."
"They're helpful?"
"I don't know."
She paused.
"Well then, do you have good classes? Did you get your timetable?"
"Yes. I have five core subjects and two electives."
"Oh ok, did you want to talk about that?"
"Not really."
She paused again.
"Kendall?" she asked, scrunching her eyebrows.
"What?" I replied bluntly.
"Did you make any friends?"
I was waiting for this question, and I could tell that she was too. I struggled to reply.
"It's only the first day."
"I get that, but did you meet anyone at least?"
"Uhm.." I looked down trying to hide my emotions.
"Kendall? It's alright if you didn't."
"I...uh," I could feel my whole face turning red and my eyeballs watering. Why was I doing this? I didn't know.
"Mum, do you remember Jason Rick?" I finally let out, and said it as quickly as I could.
"Of course I remember him, he was your best friend! Why wouldn't I?"
"Maybe because you told me to forget about him, I just thought you might of as well."
Mum looked down with shame.
"That was wrong of me. I'm so sorry. I think about that everyday, I shouldn't have ever let you forget your only best friend."
"No, I'm glad you did. I just wish I didn't have to remember him again."
I stood up and patted down my dress skirt. While I was still standing, my mum continued to speak.
"What made you remember him again?" she asked.
I let out a huge sigh before letting out the news.
"Mum, he goes to my school."
Before she could reply, the front door burst open with a joyful dad.
"I'm hoommmmeee!" He sang.
At that moment I'd had enough and ran straight up to my bedroom.
As I lay down on my bed, I scrolled through my Facebook on my iPhone. Not one of my old friends- alright classmates, even asked how I was going or said that they missed me. Not that I cared too much, because I didn't feel that way about them anyway. Suddenly I got two new friend requests. One was some random girl who I was guessing was in my new class, and the other was Kimbra. I accepted both requests, then clicked into Kimbra's profile. Her profile picture was a full shot of her in a tight, skimpy black dress. Her make-up in the picture looked fine, except for the amount of mascara that she applied in it - they looked like she dunked her eyelids into a bucket of black paint. Her lips were shaped into a kiss face and she had her hands on her hips. She had 132 likes on her picture, so I decided to make it 133. I didn't necessarily like the photo of her, but I needed to get in someone's good books.
I then thought about my profile picture. It's not as interesting as Kimbra's, but it's my favourite photo of myself. It was a close up of my face, no make-up (because I don't wear make-up) and it was taken on a windy day outside. One of my old 'friends' took it and said how amazing it looked and that I should take it into a modeling agency to get looked at. That was one of the only nice things they ever said to me. It had 30 likes, almost one hundred less than Kimbra's, and I thought I had a lot.
The thoughts were suddenly interrupted by my mum opening my bedroom door. She walked in then sat on my bed.
"You didn't finish talking about Jason." She said in a serious tone, then continued. "I'm so happy for you darling, really I'm over the moon. He remembered you right?"
I sat up. I really wasn't sure how to answer that.
"Sort of. Mum don't be happy for me, we're not friends again. He's not as nice as he used to be. And to answer all the questions that you'll probably ask me, he doesn't want to be friends with me and he's a total ass."
"Kendall!"
"I'm sorry but it's true! Now can you leave?!" I snapped.
"Kendall..."
"And shut the door when you go out."
"I don't like the way you're talking to me."
"Well then go and you won't have to talk to me!"
"Attitude Kendall!"
"Yeah well, whatever."
I could tell that mum could tell I was frustrated, so she stood up and left for her own sake. I felt bad about talking to her like that, especially since she's a good friend of mine but I needed to take my anger out. Jason was my only friend I ever had and I couldn't even have him again.
