Chapter: 8

Kai pov

"Please explain why the hell you left the shatterdome, piloted a Jaeger when you couldn't handle the simulation and killed a Kaiju without consulting me?" My mother said. I stayed still and said nothing.

The fury in her eyes was replaced by worry. She engulfed me in a hug and gave me a pat on the back. "Good job on taking down that Kaiju" she said letting me go and leaving the room to give a report to command.

I blinked. Twice. Thrice. Four times before realizing that I could leave. I poked my head out into the hallway to find it empty.

It was empty.

One by one I checked every room to find it empty. Soon I found myself in the simulation room. All the cadets were lined up waiting for a turn.

I knocked and they all turned. One thing was definitely wrong. They all had bright red eyes. "Kai. Join us in bringing the precursors to earth. You could be a hero, a savior" they all said in unison.

I turned and fled. I ran down the empty corridors. I bumped into Jake. One look at his eyes and I was relieved. They were normal.

I gave him a hug. Tears threatening to stream down my face. His expression was priceless. I explained what I saw and he said it was because of the drift. Since I had no training and I went into a Jaeger without a drift compatible co-pilot I kept seeing something from the deepest parts of my mind.

I sighed with relief. We went back to the simulation room and waited for a pair of cadets to finish. I looked over at the operator's console and watch the scenario play out. It seemed like James and Lilly were piloting Bracer Pheonix against Knifehead.

"This oughta be good" I said. Knifehead scratched at their cockpit and cut the visor open. I install knew that it was over. They exited the simulation and joined the line of cadets waiting to be dismissed.

"Jenna and Kai are up. Hopefully we can get some progress now that you have been in a proper Jeager Kai" Jake said gesturing to the awaiting platform. I stepped up and plugged myself in.

Jenna plugged herself in beside me and prepared for combat. "Loading Gypsy Avenger and Leatherback" the operator said. I got into a fighting stance and flicked my visor down.

"Activating neural handshake, in t-minus 5, 4, 3, 2, 1." They said flicking the switch. The blue haze bordered my mind as our memories flowed through our heads. I got farther into my mind than last time but once I got too deep into a memory I pulled the helmet off and sat down we I stood to catch my breath.

"Adrenaline" I wheezed between breathes.

"Adrenaline? What the hell has that got anything to with this?" Jake asked.

"The reason I could drift in Saber Athena was the heat of the moment, and the adrenaline flowing through my body" I said, "I cant drift without adrenaline."

We called it quits for today after that. Jenna and I walked at the back of the group. "Hey I'm sorry about what happened" she said breaking the silence I had come to love.

I raised an eyebrow at her. "You now with Steve" she said reaching out for my hand. I pulled away and sped up.

"Stay out of my head" I snarled. I walked off in the direction of the quarters.
