I make my way to the flagpole and slump down, my back against it. I know Jessica takes forever at her locker and I have an at least 5 minute wait ahead of me. I pull out my iPod and earbuds. I turn it on, pressing shuffle and an Avril Lavigne song starts playing. I, of course, sing along. That is until I'm interrupted by none other than Justin and his posse.
"Hey Gayson" he says. I cringe as he uses the nickname he gave me. He also likes calling me Princess ever since I wore a John Mayer shirt to school. Jess wore a matching one too, we had planned it. He told Jess she looked hot in it. She scoffed and walked away, leaving me and him. He teased me, saying I was wearing a girls shirt, even after I told him its unisex.
I don't look up at him. How can such a douche think Jessica likes him. "I'm talking to you" he yells at me, kicking my shin, ripping my earbuds out of my ears. They hand around my neck. I ravel them around my iPod and slide it into my backpack before he takes my face in his hands, so I'm looking him in the eyes.
He reminds me of all the "embarrassing" things I've done over the years, like wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school and that time a newgirl asked me to the dance and I turned her down so she went on a rampage and started punching me and I refused to hit her. He might think they're bad memories, but they're not.
On the first day, Jess stood up for me, saying she loves the color and real men real pink. When that girl freaked out, she stopped her and told her that I said no because I'm taking her. The girl calmed down after that. And the best part, we actually did end up going together. They notice I'm smiling and decide to punch my face.
That is until Jessica tackles Justin, who is twice her size. And yes she is that crazy. They scatter after she makes Justin cry by kicking him in his crotch, causing him to fall over. It's amazing how someone who looks so innocent and small is so powerful. What can I say? I'm lucky she stepped in when Tanner claimed he was the "Bestest Burper Ever" and took the title.
"Grey are you okay?" she asks, getting on her knees and turning to me. I try to nod but wince. "Oh my god. Come on. We gotta get you home" she says, getting on her feet and pulling me to mine. She takes my hand and wraps her free arm over my shoulder, protectively. We manage the walk home, where we find the house empty.
She lays me on the couch, running upstairs to get the first aid kit. She brings me a cup of water which I gratefully sip. She tells me the damage. A bruise on my cheek and a couple bleeding cuts. I wince as she disinfects the cuts and she must think I almost died, because she doesn't tell me to hike up my skirt and man up. Last time she cleaned a cut for me she gave me a My Little Pony band aid. This time, I get an Elmo one.
As she nurses my wounds I stare at her intently. I feel sorry for her. There's always been guys like Justin on her case. Most girls love him, but he's a player. And all because of her pretty face, not because of her inner beauty or her personality. She always says there's a difference between being pretty and beautiful. Being pretty means you're good looking. Beautiful means you're kind, have well meaning intentions and compassion towards others. And she denies it when I call her either of these things.
The only thing she'll let me call her is wise. And that's because it couldn't be truer. She finishes and kisses my cheek to make it feel better. I get that tingly feeling in my stomach and try to ignore it like always, even though I'll never succeed.
When Alexa and mom finally came home (they had decided to go clothes shopping, not bothering asking me and knowing Jess would turn down the idea, she hates clothes shopping) is was already 6:45 and she had been nursing me for 3 hours. I insisted to her I didn't need to be babied, but in return she'd go catch a spider from outside and bring it in. She'd shove it in my face, making me freak out. And all to prove her point. Man she's stubborn...
