Steve woke up this morning wondering what his next job would be. He was scheduled to report to The Cube Monday morning for another interview and a new work assignment. Working at the pools these past months had been refreshing; he was outdoors with a crowd of happy bathers and swimmers, there was a bit of science involved, and he enjoyed the perks that came with the job.
The Big Guy’s rule—that you had to do work you had never done before—was a problem in Steve’s case because he had done so many things. Maybe it meant work you had been paid for. He’d find out tomorrow.
Today he was going to make time for Recreation and Reflection. He smiled to himself, remembering this was a direct quote from the Apple Campus 2 proposal to the Cupertino City Council back in June. In fact, he had probably written those words himself!
“Apple proposes to create Apple Campus 2 - an integrated 21st century campus surrounded by green space. This new development will provide a serene and secure environment reflecting Apple’s values of innovation, ease of use and beauty.
Create a landscape environment that gives Apple’s employees opportunities for recreation and reflection.
Provide an on-site venue for the introduction of Apple’s new products that will generate surprise and delight, and enable the products to be introduced at Apple’s corporate home.”
What a beautiful vision! He had conferred with the architect for over two years to make sure the plans were right, down to the tiniest detail, that they manifested his dream. The new headquarters was supposed to be his signature legacy, but they hadn’t even broken ground when he was called up here.
Steve had made the presentation to the City of Cupertino himself. He showed them the renderings, described the perfectly circular building—“like a spaceship has landed”—and told them that it would be “the best office building in the world”.
Who wouldn’t want to work there? Steve wanted to work there. He had planned to work there. If all went well, he would work there, in his next life.
Better get back to reality now. He was still here on The Cloud. Steve got up and headed over to The Square, to the area set aside for recreation and reflection. You had to cut through the running and skateboarding lanes, circle around the weight lifters and kickball games, but at the center was a peaceful, serene area.
Gandhi would be there, as usual, and Steve could quiz him, as usual, about reincarnation. He still hadn’t given up on his plan to get back and finish Apple Campus 2.
But how?
